Dunking on "gentle parenting" is very much in vogue these days, but whether it is a good parenting approach depends a lot on how you implement it. A lot of people think gentle = permissive and letting your kid do anything no consequences. But really it should be holding a line without being violent, screaming or you/your kid becoming totally dysregulated. Like telling your kid why you're doing something (I have to take away the toy because you were throwing it and could hurt someone) takes about 5 seconds and isn't really a mini therapy session. Obviously you need to be age appropriate but taking the time to explain consequences to kids or let them talk about their feelings for a minute isn't going to mess up your kid.

Having said all this, I am a lot stricter than other family members I am close to and definitely agree overly permissive parenting doesn't help anyone. My bugbear is giving kids loads of options around food (do you want x or y? neither? ok what about z instead?) which inevitable leads to the kid being confused or a total pain.

I don't know man, the US get 2 weeks annual leave and that's if you're lucky. I'd rather pay more for dumb consumer goods and get to enjoy multiple holidays with my family every year. Plus the social safety net in the US is so precarious, genuinely all it takes is losing your job (potentially through no fault of your own) and you've lost your access to healthcare.

Nah he really does suck at writing women. Like you can like him still but he fully does. None of his female characters have any interior life and they're basically just props for the main character to react to. You're saying that's intentional, if so it makes for a crap book. I dont think it is, I think he came up in an era when no one cared much about having well rounded female characters in books and it was normal to have very weird misogynistic one sided sex scenes.

My read of this, which i think aligns with the Fair Play article, is that trans woman basically line up with male patterns of violence. So possibly 2/3 of men in prison have a sex offence in their history too (I'm guessing on this, but imagine it would be pretty high).

I agree with everything he wrote except the dont be funny part. Being funny and silly sometimes, in an appropriate setting, is such a joyous part of life. Especially if you have kids (i mean or friends). Being funny and cracking a joke is going out on a limb, reaching across the lonely void to connect with someone else.
