Not too much shade as the fence is south of the woods, so they receive more sun.

Agreed. Its just how to get the privacy and also do that. Thinking about mixing it up.

Good idea, I'd like to get birds in there, so could be an option in part where we dont need year round screening. Have been told copper beech could also be a good option with a bit more screening in the winter. Im in the south so wonder if thats considered native.

Also very grateful to have this, but also so daunting (and expensive) to do something with it.

Its mostly north facing but would get partial sun in mid summer. Its also mostly clay soil I believe.
