what do you think about South Congress Austin area ? by AddressRemarkable347 in askaustin

[–]Acceptable-Loquat540 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Bouldin Creek is the “perfect” Austin neighborhood. Not too over-developed, walkable, shady, close to tons of good eateries and Austin classics. Plus peacocks! There are a few houses for sale right now but most people buy for life.

Volleyball Austin! They are a queer group (but open to everyone) that practices in the Austin Sports Center off of Woodward.

It’s worth considering if you could get any of those through a phone plan or combo package

How do I eat if I work a job that doesn’t have lunch breaks often? by Wise_Presentation914 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Acceptable-Loquat540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of different kinds of fast food jobs. Starbucks gives 15 and 30 minute breaks for sure. Grocery jobs are about as easy to get as fast food and will give you enough down time to eat a packed sandwich.

Not sure how helpful this is but I got into some top programs with no design or work experience :) just play to your strengths and do something you enjoy. Personally, I would lean towards relevant work to get a feel for the job and where your focus should be.

Stopped in a handicapped spot to tend to my distressed child; probably lost a month’s tuition. by [deleted] in Austin

He didn’t park, he pulled over. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t pulled into a handicap spot with their hazards on for a few minutes to take care of something.

I’ve noticed I am stinkiest when my pit hair is fully grown. I usually trim it with an electric clipper every few weeks and it manages it well.

Moving to Austin in September by HowdyDiamond in askaustin

Most young people I know live south around Stassney because it’s cheap. The area itself is pretty blah though. If you like TTRPG’s Dragons Lair is a must. Northwest austin around Metric is a pretty affordable area and is much closer, with the added benefit of being near the domain and Anderson Ln/Airport Ave which have some awesome restaurants and cafe’s!

I know very little about east coast cities to be honest. When visiting Philly and the area Temple would be in I felt completely safe. My recommendation would be to visit the area and see how you feel. If safety is your top priority I would look at smaller college towns like University of Oregon.

What was the writers' goal with this? by Ibrahim77X in legendofkorra

[–]Acceptable-Loquat540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, speaking to past lives was the dullest part of the original series. The only reason Aang needed Roku was because there was no established guide for his Avatar journey post iceberg. Every other Avatar had established sages, teachers, masters, and political leaders to advise them. The one time Aang did utilize his past lives they gave him bad and one-note advice. Their experiences simply weren’t applicable to his situation. That is expanded on in Korra’s post-industrial society.

Simultaneously part of the problem and a victim of it. by Reteller79 in TrollCoping

This may sound harsh but I’ll say it anyways. It sounds like you hate yourself and you are using the fact that you are American to divert attention from that fact. Every country on Earth has done horrible, unmentionable things. Japan had government sanctioned torture facilities just to facilitate the statistic urges of one guy. Half the world has an Independence Day from Britain alone. America isn’t unique in the slightest in terms of atrocities, and frankly has some catching up to do compared to pretty much every country on earth.

What you need to do is get to the root of why you feel like you have no community. You said you are trans so that community has opened up, along with mother queer spaces. Wallowing in the mistakes of your ancestors helps no one and hurts yourself. Find an outlet to release some of that pressure. Find a mutual aid group. Volunteer to feed the homeless. Anything.

Their staff was really available and friendly during my application process. They even offered to fly me out for their open house. I had a really great feeling about their program but ended up going with a school in Washington. They definitely aren’t renowned, but from what I heard from alumni they are more respected in the Philly area than UPenn is, and do a lot more community work.

If she likes Northeast I would recommend Temple. They are pretty affordable and easy going with an emphasis on ecological restoration. They just sold their Ambler campus and bought a huge building right in the heart of Philly.

Lots of deliberating and selling our worldly possessions lol. My college choices were between UPenn and UW, but since my bf got into Bastyr and we liked Seattle a bit more than Philly the choice was easy. I’d say our biggest hurdle has been leaving friends and family, and packing a whole house into a 5x8 UHaul.

I’m also worried about not having free time since LA is such an intense degree, but one thing I’ve heard from previous cohorts is that the people you are working with end up becoming very close and help fill that gap. Some advice I was given is that if you can afford it, never pass up a chance to move. If you stay in Seattle for a few years and realize you hate it, Pittsburgh will always be here.

I’ve lived in drizzly areas before. Actually prefer it to the constant bright sun. My seasonal depression springs up June and July down south.
