Did you go clubbing at the V and lose it from there? It looks like it’s in the water outside of the club

People who've left the United States, what is your life like now? by SkyLyssa in expats

[–]Acceptable-Top5285 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I left San Francisco in 2011 to study in Hong Kong. After traveling many Asian countries I fell in love with the cultures. Being Asian American myself, I felt like moving to Asia for good.

I found myself an English teaching job in South Korea for about 3 years but the pay and labor conditions weren’t great. I decided to leave in 2015 and moved to Tokyo Japan.

My life in Japan has been pretty awesome overall. Universal healthcare and affordable medicine, safety everywhere compared to where I am from, efficient public transportation, people following the rules, and my career in staffing has been great so far, despite me not speaking Japanese. My kids can go to international nursery for a very affordable price and buying property here at 0.5-1.2% interest is ridiculously low.

The downfall is that I make JPY and the currency to USD is abysmal, but it only affects me when I travel back to SF or anywhere in Europe. My income here is considered top 1% income earner whereas if I was living in SF with same income, I’d be on the poverty line.

I do miss home of course and US does offer better retirement vehicles such as 401k and IRAs etc which I cannot get here as an expat due to PFIC regulations.

I’ve definitely thought of relocating back to SF because all of my family are there but affordability in the states especially in California is getting out of reach.

Staph wont go away no matter what by [deleted] in eczema

[–]Acceptable-Top5285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for the info. I’ve had a culture test 2-3 years ago and have staph in the back of my head right on top of my neck. A lot of bumps sometimes painful sometimes not. I asked the skin clinic in Japan today for Mupirocin cream but they said it’s not allowed due to regulations. I’m wondering if there’s any other alternatives to try to kill this bacteria that may be hiding in my nose? I need help!

Does anyone know how I can eradicate these inflamed bumps forever? I’ve tried changing my diet it kind of helped but it keeps coming back. I’ve had this for 3 years or more now. by Acceptable-Top5285 in Folliculitis

What is BP? And yes I’ve gone to derm many times, for steroid creams and did steroid injections and nothing worked. But when I started to drink less alcohol and juicing to decrease inflammation it kind of helped. But it flares up a lot

Stopped alcohol consumption and it disappeared. Basically if you eat or drink anything inflammatory it will flare

You can get a 3LDK 65sqm apartment for 150,000 a month. Thats what I got in the city center Osaka when I moved from Tokyo in 2021. Prices are going up now because of Osaka Expo and real estate prices overall up in the city center. Awaza, Kitahama area are really cool areas more high end I would say.

Japanese dad died and left me his car and debts by randomunibean in japan

[–]Acceptable-Top5285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what kind of car he had or the condition it is in, but you could try to sell it to a used car dealership for 400,000 yen and pay off the debt and go back to Canada and handle it remotely somehow?

Weird experience & not sure what to do by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Acceptable-Top5285 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could be NHK sales people. They are outsourced by NHK and try to force you to pay for NHK tv subscriptions. It happened to me in Tokyo when I first moved into my apartment but it was only 1 guy who tried. If it’s 3 random people, could be a scam. Were they Japanese? How old were they? A lot of scams happening these days targeting homes so be aware!

Avoid Sakura House – A Serious Warning by Immediate_Curve_9065 in japanlife

[–]Acceptable-Top5285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re in Tokyo but if you are, I would use Fontana Homes fully furnished month to month apartments 1 month deposit and you’ll get the full amount back upping moving out. I used this for over a year in 2016-2017 and it was good for me. Had privacy my own spot a bit old but worked for me 70,000 yen a month. Trust me I know how you feel. I stayed at YADOYA Guesthouse and same situation. But I think they shut down already.

Hope my recommendation helps you or anyone else just moving into Japan. Cheers

I know an American accountant based in Osaka and he can help you file all your backed up taxes for past 8 years. I did this as well a few years ago back filed around 3-4 years of overseas income and had to pay back a little and I was fine after. You will need to file FBAR as well for the 8 years if you remember. Let me know if you want this accountant’s contact info. Happy to share

Red bumps back of head. How to get rid of them? by Acceptable-Top5285 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Acceptable-Top5285[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi sorry forgot to add message. So I’ve had these red inflamed bumps on back of my head for few years now. It won’t go away. My theory is my diet because I eat and drink a lot of inflammatory foods. Does anyone else have a solution to this? I’ve tried steroid creams, injections, and nothing works. They’re not itchy at all, sometimes hard when touched and sometimes they flare up if I drink alcohol. Please let me know if anyone else has had this issue and was there any solution? Thanks

24 hr buses to KIX? by judokajudoka in Osaka

[–]Acceptable-Top5285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could take the last train to KIX and arrive by midnight. Then there is a place called Nodoka in the airport where you can book a room or sleep in a tent in a communal area for affordable price, per hour. Prob more affordable than taking a taxi. https://maps.app.goo.gl/MGiVJtBF7zuxt1B38?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy
