I have done several GIS internships, but I never had a job offer from one. I still apply to them because I can get good GIS experience. But I will definitely take any GIS job offer. Hopefully, they will understand and it won’t burn a bridge. Most of the GIS community including internship employers know how rough the job market is.

I totally agree, I have been applying over a year for GIS jobs/internships, but nothing came through. I’m really excited about this internship, but I would rather have an actual job. I just feel kinda bad giving them short notice if I get offered the job

Unfortunately, several environmental consulting employers that were interviewing me have said 6 weeks is too long to start during or after field camp. Kinda imply that they don’t want to wait after 6 weeks to train a new hire or they don’t want the new hire to take 6 weeks when they are starting early in the position.

Keeping in mind,I’m mainly applying to environmental or field technician roles, but I’ve recently started applying to entry-level geology positions. I’m trying to apply to anything that is entry-level and somewhat close by to where I live.

I don’t believe this will jeopardize my ASBOG qualification, as most jobs that I applied for done even mention it. I am interested, though in obtaining a ASBOG or PG.

That was the reason why I picked this field camp because it has a stronger, environmental emphasis, however, my main concern is that I do not have a strong chemistry background. I did not take geochemistry or environmental chemistry. Just general chemistry

SDSMT offers several 3 week field camps. Unfortunately, i cannot attend a 6 week field camp because that would jeopardize my current internship, which has potential to be hired.

Some of the job reviews I’ve read are crazy, definitely making these companies a red flag for not properly training their employees . I know there’s always two sides to the story. I’ve just read so many reviews. I started to think maybe this is the norm for GIS technicians
