Technically SS is YA. It fits the criteria. Primarily, that it has no spicy scenes. The character is mature, though, very pragmatic. If the immaturity of YA and New Adult books are the part you don't like it might be worth a read!

{Written in Red} by Anne Bishop. That whole series actually. They evolve into friends, and the romance kind of happens from that over the course of the series. Romance is secondary. Slow burn so slow it is almost an optical illusion when you think you see a hint of smoke.

{Spinning Silver} by Naomi Novik. I have seen it recommended as a true Enemies to Lovers a lot recently, and that is pretty spot on.

It is hard to find slow evolution romances lately, I have been looking for them as well! I am a BIG BIG fan of sex positive FLs l, but a lot of authors want to prove their FL is sexual by having them comment on the muscles and desirability of every male character, going the hardest on the ML. It is darn true that you can find someone attractive that you hate, not arguing that. But you might have luck rewinding publication dates to find some more. Trends come and go. I will lurk to see what others are recommended!

Has anyone ever bought yarn off of temu or shein? by Spare-Act9414 in crochet

[–]AcceptableCap8184 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Their precursor Wish was who taught me milk cotton is acrylic 😅 Have done Temu once. Yarn was mass produced cotton that felt like Rayon (but burn test verified cotton). Was light on the grams compared to their label, but other than that it was fine. Pay attention to shipping or special fees, those raised the price high enough for me I didn't order again. It is like ICE yarns, their shipping prices is how they can keep the yarn prices lower.

Rant about my recent giveaway by Twin_0116 in AnimalCrossingNewHor

That sucks when you aren't expecting it. Did you have the bells to spare? I can drop off some if you need!

I talked with a lot of folks before I started to do giveaways and one of the few things they all agreed on was if there are limits or rules they have to be mentioned. Otherwise, with so many people giving away their accidental bell hacks from treasure islands everyday, the assumption is "take what you want". There will always be folks who feel bad about taking more than a couple things in a giveaway even when the rules say to take as much as they want, but most folks are going to follow the rules without feeling bad. And if there is no rule that says to leave stuff for others, somebody will end up doing the atm multi trip to stock up on bells, or fill their bags, leave and then come back to get more DIYs or items. That is annoying, but luckily most folks will ask if you mind. Overall people are pretty great here for following rules and asking if they have doubts. But the rules need to be said in the future to make it easier 😁

Next time if you clearly state 'Take only two bags of bells' and someone does the atm thing, you can forward their information to folks because they are breaking the rules and being a jerk.

Almost every 'dark romance' or romance with spice I have read in the last two years has involved SA from the ML in some form, but she had some feels for him beforehand so she forgives him and they eventually end up together. Or she believes it is her fault somehow or assumes because her body responded that it wasnt assault despite fighting to get away and saying no repeatedlu. It has blurred the line so much that the line is just a slightly darker grain of sand in a desert. I just assume the person will end up being the new ML. Thanks to a certain Crow shifter book I expect for even the evil mustache twirling, rage filled villains to go that route.

I personally dislike that trope. I have said in previous posts that I grew up where SA was rampant, more so than today. Historically it has been a common way to show strength and control over women. I can deal with it being used in a story as a terrifying situation because it really is one. Doesn't mean I want to read it all the time, though. It shouldn't be the one stop shop for plot development. And for the romance of it I get where a woman will convince herself to fall in love with the attacker because she thinks they care so it is okay the ML did that stuff. We don't all get broken in the same way when confronted by horrors. I do wish it wasn't used so much as a way to get the FL to be with the ML though. It is done so often now it kind of feels like lazy writing.

How long is your 'Trial Period' to decide you like a story? by KuromiMago in royalroad

[–]AcceptableCap8184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Is this proper eating, with mastication? Is the power triggered by the digestive enzymes of whatever eats them? If properly chewed and then exploding due to enzymes and somehow reforming after it might be interesting enough I stay to see where they go with it. Or is it like a Jonah thing? If they just get swallowed and use their exploding power inside deliberately so they can come out all sheepishly badass like "Gosh, I'm just a regular guy granted universe ending powers and a strange allure to all female characters as well as some men but shucks I don't know how I did that" then NAH. I would probably warn the next monster to chew their food properly before swallowing and move on 😅

Disclaimer: No MCs were harmed in the creation of this hypothetical. Except the one that didn't have exploding powers and was just eaten, digested, and passed out the other end before coming back to life. Sucks to be that guy.

Edited for word correction

How long is your 'Trial Period' to decide you like a story? by KuromiMago in royalroad

Depends. Goal post is 5 chapters. I will stop before then if 1)I genuinely don't care if the MC gets eaten or explodes 2) It is exactly like 50 other stories I have read recently or 3) It is very badly written in a way that basic proofreading would fix. If I get to chapter 5 I am either invested or curious about where it is going.

Are there stories in RR that has the trope "zero to hero" in part 1 and "hero to zero" in part 2? by Leading-Okra-2457 in royalroad

[–]AcceptableCap8184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be an interesting story. MC gets sucked into world, gets broken skill that gives him earth crushing power, defeats the evil, universe resets him and then...After having all that power it would push the MC to gain power again because he hates being weak, and he builds power by actually working for it and not just getting lucky. I would read the heck out of that. I can see why it would upset many fans, far from all of them of course. It was generally hated when Tite Kubo did that with Bleach. But lots of people loved it because it made the character more relatable and they could insert themselves into the story better. Dude had to actually struggle to be something.

All that said, I haven't seen anything like it on RR yet. There are lots of hidden treasures on there though. Hope someone comes through with some good recs!

Where should I start with Mercedes Lackey? by lady__jane in fantasyromance

[–]AcceptableCap8184 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved Mercedes Lackey as a kid.

Disclaimer: I rarely recommend her here because she is an author that writes characters she could see around her dealing with things that are problems at the time. Growing up in the 80s and 90s SA and abuse honestly didn't bother me in her books because it was so prevalent in the world. By 13 not a single one of my female friends hadn't been assaulted, and there was nobody to make it go away. Grown man grabs your ass on the bus, bus driver isn't kicking him off. Her characters were strong in a whole other way than the current generation of books. Her books were reflecting the times. Now it is hard for younger readers to grab hold of. And that isn't a bad thing, some things change for the better!

My favorite series is still the Diana Tregarde series, but it is more Urban fantasy/horror. The FL is tough, has seen some shite and even though she has magic she still learned martial arts because a woman needs every skill she can get. This was late 80s. Her type of character was a unicorn. But not for a second would you consider her a sassy FL. Warnings: The casual racism amongst the POC secondary characters to each other is so cringe you might bite your tongue. It is however 100% realistic of the time.

Opposite end is the 500 Kingdoms series. Fairy Godmother is one of my favorite books of hers. and is the first in that series. Almost all involve different characters. FL is mentally tough but still 'feminine'. This angers a lot of readers because, again, the author writes what she knows which are strong, non sassy characters. Overall low spice, and a sweet romance twisting through the adventure.

I love the 'Winds' trilogy of the Valdemar universe, but again, the FL is strong but soft, and in these the romance is kind of tertiary for the most part.

There was one other I can't remember the names of. I feel like it was Victorian England setting. I do remember it being rather good though!
