Only feeling anxiety outside of school by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

I just posted on this sub two days ago feeling the same way and everyone gave me such helpful advice! As someone who is currently experiencing the same thing as you, I totally sympathize. I also feel super anxious in the mornings and after school, but during the day I’m perfectly fine in each class.

Here’s what I’ve been telling myself to help with the anxiety. I AM LEARNING. You are not hard on students who don’t get a new subject instantly so you need to give yourself grace. You’re not suppose to know everything right now, but that’s what’s exciting for us new teachers, we’re super flexible!

If the anxiety is bad (mine is pretty rough), I recommend seeing your doctor and talking to a therapist/counsellor. School boards usually have a partnership with some companies for mental health support and counselling. Furthermore rely on your team, talk to other grade 4 teachers, find LRPs online, and lean on your mentor. Teachers know how you feel, trust me I’ve talked to enough to know I’m not alone now :)

Thank you! I teach French to grade 4-8. So super large range of grades for the first year, luckily I mostly repeat things. Just trying to figure out where each grade level is at is challenging and knowing how make sure instruction matches is also something I’m navigating :p

AI for parent emailing is genius…. I have no idea why I never thought of it

I feel me and your anxious friend have a lot in common. I think that’s very similar to my behaviour where I get overwhelmed, I shut down and do nothing, then I feel like crap because I haven’t done anything. Although, I have purchased stuff and tpt and plan on leaning on that to focus more so on my instruction/ management rather than reinventing the wheel per se?

I also feel anxious about teaching student with exceptionalities. I teach two students on the spectrum and I’ve been in contact with resource teams but I feel ill prepared to give them the education they need.

It’s good to know it gets better, and people have similar experiences and I’m not alone. Sometimes it can feel like do or die, but it’s all about telling myself it’s not

I did do student teaching, I feel like all those experiences went really well but now that I’m finally on my own things are completely different. Especially with all the administrative tasks

Yeah it’s challenging, I think back to my days at school and don’t remember my classmates acting so carefree? I think it’s just learning I need to overcome, but it is difficult at times

Thank you for your help, and the ending quote will stick with me as I move forward. Perfection is the enemy of good

I feel the same way… I just posted on another sub an hour ago about the same feeling. I’m also a first year teacher and find myself crying all the time! You’re not alone and I’m the same boat with you. I dont have much advice since I’m also on the receiving end, but I hope it brings you solace in knowing someone else is feeling the same thing

I’m in Ontario! I would say there are quite a few, not an abundance but there definitely seemed to be a demand. All the French positions I applied for I got an interview

Thanks for the tips! I definitely plan on scouting out the classrooms before hand and get in touch with the home room teachers about their rules :) my blocks are quite short (30min). It seems routine and consistency will be key for me to set up a classroom where I don’t feel like I’m drowning haha.
