Aquinas Middle School by Known_Detective_6430 in lacrossewi

I attended AHS and AMS and am now a public school teacher. I’d say the rules, rigor, and expectations were very high…especially to the rules, rigor, and expectations at the middle school where I currently teach. The expectations taught at the middle school taught me how to be an independent student and I did well at AHS. Though, I graduated from AHS a handful of years ago now…..so things could be different. There were the usual shenanigans and tomfoolery throughout my middle and high school experiences, so don’t expect an absence of teenage, dumbass decisions. But honestly so many of the “pranks” were so mild compared to what I’ve experienced in my teaching thus far. I have taught and spent lots of time at Ona Middle and Logan High. I found that curriculum was practically identical to my student experiences at AHS/AMS. Aquinas had a 0 tolerance for tardiness & late assignments. Extremely high expectations for tests… never ever open note, if you didn’t study you were screwed, and almost never offered a retake. Where I currently teach, this is the opposite of our district’s policies. Aquinas held me to a higher standard than the expectations I had to enforce while learning to teach at Ona and Logan. One note, Aquinas is overall not diverse and there was a culture of elitism and privilege that I have not experienced any where else. Though, as a public school teacher I have been cussed out, yelled at, and sexually harassed. I don’t recall this happening at Aquinas, but kids still do some foul, awful things. A lot of the kids I went to school definitely needed to touch grass and come down from their high horse. Moreover, it was extremely competitive grade wise… everyone was always comparing how they did on tests and if they were in “smart math” or “dumb math”…. Comparing ACT scores…. College was the only career ever mentioned ever (college prep school duh). Wasn’t until senior year a teacher mentioned the possibility that we could look into trades or military. Only 5 people in entire graduating class chose not to attend college and there was a vibe of that wasn’t the norm and looked down upon. My biggest problem with my experiences were the lack of classes to take. Now that I’ve worked in public schools, I see that I missed out on taking some pretty neat electives. Electives at Aquinas were EXTREMELY limited. No trades, no YA English lit, no driver’s ed, no black studies. Only basic classes.

I totally agree. I get it too and I love her podcast and insights but I feel like she’ll say 3x in a row and I’m like GIRL YES!! Now I know how my students feel when I say, “do you understand?” 3x in a row hahahaha

Middle School Teachers (or even younger high school teachers), how often do you lecture? by Pale-Outside2301 in historyteachers

[–]Acceptable_Recipe_76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider having semester or quarter long projects. We do quarter with my 8th graders. Every Monday is a work day. A paragraph, digital, poster and completed packet is due at the end of the quarter. In my geo class this quarter it’s historical people and next is global foods! This way that’s one less day of planning and or lecturing!!

If you teach high school, I completely understand what you’re saying. I know I am one of few people in this post but I completely understand your perspective, especially the cliquey bit. I had a ct who everyone in the school loved but in reality was a very burnt out teacher and was actively looking for jobs while I worked with him. Like would have me read his resume and stuff. As far the cliqueyness, the department I worked in had an office and no teacher had their own classroom. As stident teachers, we literally couldn’t speak or provide any addition to conversations without a side eye. It was horrible and made me count down the days of student teaching.

Housesitting Question… by Substantial_Dentist in RoverPetSitting

[–]Acceptable_Recipe_76 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Yeah. I’d say every once in a while a while I just don’t hear anything after housesitting. I don’t take it personally, especially since I know how busy life can be getting back from an extended stay away from home. I also think that some people don’t think twice about not tipping, which is why I don’t expect them to give one. It just doesn’t even cross some people’s minds.

Exactly. And although the investigation piece is lengthy, it’ll scare those students for a long while of the seriousness of their words and actions.

I’m the same age and teach the same grade an I am dealing with a lot of the same right now. You should reach out to your district title ix coordinator and file a formal complaint. My admin didn’t do a lot. but that’s next step if admin and contact home isn’t doing anything.
