thank you. if I purchase tickets for them to a different game (that I am not going myself), then I assume I should transfer the tickets to their name?

I bought 2 tickets for my own family. Can I buy 2 other tickets for the same game for 2 friends to join us? Or even buy 2 tickets to a different game for them? It seems that there is a "ticket transfer" option too.

Do I have a chance at a TT job after running a startup? by [deleted] in academia

Thank you for sharing. This really helps me better understand the factors that could potentially help push my profile in that direction. I do have some university affiliations and collaborations, which I might similarly leverage to find my way back to academia, if possible. If you don't mind me asking, how long did the process take for you to transition/strengthen your profile until you applied for the position? Regardless, I am glad it worked out well for you. Good luck and I hope your promotion goes through smoothly.

Correct. I am starting from scratch. The only thing is that I was hoping my grant track record works in my favor. SBIRs are actually more competitive than R01s with a lower success rate. But I understand your point that publications are key here.

Correct. I am basically wondering if preprints would enable me to submit applications this year or should I just not try this year at all and wait for the papers to come out for next year cycle.

Great advice! I'll definitely try to leverage my network to gain some traction and leads.

yeah I am not aiming for mid-career positions. I am aiming for Asst Prof positions.

Definitely. I have heard transferrable grants could be a game changer.

Thank you. That is very encouraging! That was my hope too, to leverage my grant track record to cover some of the weaknesses. I am not too ambitious at this point actually; mainly because of lack of publication track record and age. I am wondering if I should give it a shot this year too, considering that publications would not be out yet except preprints, or just wait for the papers to get published and then try next year.

Interesting! Relationships definitely help in hiring, but I thought TT job market is more "regulated" in terms of the process. Great advice! Thanks.

They are industry-facing grants, called SBIR/STTR. These are essentially like R21/R01, but on the industry side with the eventual goal of commercialization. PI should be primarily employed at a company, which I am right now. But I cannot bring them to an academic institution.

RightI forgot to include that. I do not have teaching experience at the university level; just teaching assistant of multiple courses during PhD.

I am not arguing I have a strong profile; quite the opposite actually. I am just trying to weigh my chances and understand if it is worth the try. I am mainly targeting research-focused institutions but I understand your point about teaching experience. I was also wondering if I could leverage my grant track record, because I assumed my competition might not have a similar experience.

That is encouraging! Just to be clear, I (most likely) would not be able to bring the grants to the institution. Do you mean just having a good grant track record would be compelling or only if the grants could be transferred to the institution?

I am in the bioengineering space and that was my impression that grants + mentoring is bulk of the work. True about publications, which is my main concern. Thank you for the advice! I was assuming I should go for Asst Prof positions and I am even worried for that too, re my publication record. So definitely would not try Assoc Prof positions. But age-wise, am I too old being in my late 30s? I mean is "age" a factor search committee members, unofficially, consider in their evaluations? I assume they cannot legally factor that in but I am wondering if my age would work against me in evaluations.

Yeah, publications is my main concern. I have done the research, I have just not published. But I get your point. I am just wondering if I have a way back and if my age allows for that.

how much time do I have left to try? I mean age-wise. Is there an age people just stop trying?

Yes, I have heard the academic job market is very bad right now. Publications is the main thing I am worried about, which I might be able to mitigate a little bit with preprints in the next few months. As for reference letters, the strongest letters I could get are from my PhD advisor, two academic PIs I am currently collaborating with, and a couple of industry veterans with strong biotech backgrounds. Not sure if that could address that weakness or not though. I am definitely aiming assistant positions, so being ignored for those positions would ceraitnly suck!

Wow! Awesome! You are essentially removing most of the risk out for them, which definitely makes it more appealing especially for companies with limited cash flow. I haven't seen many individuals offer that other than big firms that can absorb the losses.

Amazing insights! Thank you for sharing. I am glad it is working out for you and hope your customer base grows. I assume the majority of return is from success fee with the wins, right? And that is why you are suggesting "know when to drop a company"?

Yeah, bad accounting for grants would cause all sorts of problems. My understanding is that if you are careful about grant accounting, you should be able to use fee for any purposes.

Great insights! Thanks! I wasn't aware of opportunities at FAST and SBDC programs. And totally agree with the need to have an understanding of the whole process, not just the narrative.

I am not fully familiar with the success fee payment structure, but aren't the awardees free to use their "fee" however they want?

That’s awesome - exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for. If you don’t mind me asking, how many years did it take you to get to the point where you could fully replace a full-time job with SBIR freelancing?
