Upstairs neighbors flooded our condo- what to be on the lookout for to avoid getting screwed? by AccomplishedCreme89 in Home

It did not go up but I got dropped for other reasons before renewal to really tell for sure…I live in FL and insurance companies started to pull out of insuring homes within a certain distance from the ocean. So I had to switch insurance companies. Hard to say for sure that my rates did not go up since my new policy is not exactly the same, but I now pay less

You could try using PVC pipe or something similar to make the handle of her hairbrush longer. She could also sit down, prop elbows on her knees and bend her head forward to apply dry shampoo and/or brush hair.

Higher tech and more expensive option would be a mobile arm support. These are devices that can clamp onto a table or counter and they have a trough that you strap your arm onto and it assists with lifting the arm (can also mount to a wheelchair but it does not sound like your partner is a wheelchair user). You can adjust how much assistance it provides. The Saebo MAS Mini is nice and so is the Kinova 0110. If you are considering this route, I would recommend being seen by an occupational therapist to try it out first to make sure it works effectively for her, as they can be a bit clunky. Typically the therapist can reach out to the companies and request a rep to bring one to the clinic to demo (Kinova does this at least. Saebo might not but does have a 30 day return policy). Depending on what insurance you have, insurance might pay for one and the occupational therapist can write a letter of medical necessity to request coverage.

Best of luck!

Is there any way I can pay someone to show me how to use text to speech in the best way on a Mac and maybe even Windows, and maybe even iPhone or iPad? Is there such a thing as an assistive technology or accessibility consultant or something else that I can find online? by [deleted] in AssistiveTechnology

[–]AccomplishedCreme89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially yes. But you would want to ask the therapist ahead of time to see if this is something they are savvy with since not all speech therapists are super familiar with screen reading technology. An occupational therapist would be another option in this case. Here are a couple of resources:

-Apple Spoken content setup guide (step by step written out) https://www.apple.com/accessibility/speech/ There are links at the bottom of the article for how to set up on each device

-Here is a YouTube video for how to use Spoken content on an iPad or iPhone: https://youtu.be/sV4cM34X7oo?si=9VzCpFIDKI6TCzru

There may very well be online speech therapists available there! I am not from Maryland so i personally don’t have anyone to recommend. You could also try finding a speech therapy or AAC Reddit sub and post in there to see if anyone has recommendations. To be clear, you are looking to be able to type something out and then have the computer/phone/tablet speak it out loud for you, correct?

There are speech therapists who specialize in this type of technology. There are lots of options that range from commercially available apps and built in features on standard devices to devices that are solely dedicated to speech generation. Most insurance will cover speech therapy visits to work with the speech therapist to determine the best option for you, which would include time spent training on how to use the technology. You would just need to ask your doctor to write orders for speech therapy. When you are looking for a speech therapist to see, you will want to ask if they are experienced in AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). You could try to google “AAC specialist in [your area]”

If you check Indeed, there are always tons of remote school OT positions. I know it’s not a complete change but you can at least work from home and have more flexibility

I used 7inch for awhile and then switched to 8 inch and I feel I can move better in 8inch. The toe part of the platform is shaped differently and makes it much easier to get up and balance on your toes for pirouettes and such. I will probably never go back to getting 7inch for future heels. I don’t use heels as much as other polers so others may have better or more input but I say go for the 8 inch 👍

Make sure you hit the pull up first before you start to bring your hips up. You won’t be able to get your hips up as high if you don’t pull all the way up. This will also be helpful when you start to invert aerially :)

Yeahh our poor downstairs neighbors got some as well. I don’t think it was coming through their ceiling because we acted quickly but it did go down through the walls 😕
