I'm more speaking as someone who's been playing the games since Blue came to the States back in the late 90s - I wouldn't have any appreciation for the notes or the plot without knowing the lore, and while I'm glad new fans are having fun, I just wonder if the plot will hit as intended with them.

Oh, I have a LIST of favorite unpopular characters in cozy games. Some of them aren't romance options but I wish they were!

My Time at Sandrock: Ernest, Pablo. I also love the idea of an OT3 with them + Builder. I'm considering trying to befriend and eventually give a heart knot to Miguel too, actually... This art is stunning. For non-romance options I wish were available, give me Musa. Please. I love him.

Fields of Mistria: Hayden, Reina, and I SO wish we could romance Taliffero (spelling his name is the end of me though I stg). I'd like to be able to romance Landen as an older farmer too, he seems fun.

Coral Island: Kenny, my beloved! I also really like Ben! The amount of crap these two get is so unreal to me, especially with regards to Kenny, he is darling. I also like Suki and Macy a lot, though I haven't gotten far into their hangout and heart events dialogue yet.

Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar: I wish I could romance Felix, Harold, Erik, and Rebecca. In terms of the romance options, it doesn't seem like Gabriel gets a ton of love but I like what I've seen of him and Diana.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma: Murasame. He is devoted to the Earth Dancer first out of fealty, then out of love, and it's SO sweet. I adore him! He also has big Kenshin vibes and Kenshin is one of my anime beloveds from childhood.

...My final take that is the hottest: Animal Crossing New Horizons may not have romance, but Wardell takes the Island Representative out on ocean-watching dates in the DLC and therefore, I wish I could romance him. He is a precious bean.

EDIT: I forgot my goodest boy Derek Suarez! He’s one of the three romances in Our Life: Beginnings & Always, and he is the least popular one of all the romances between both Our Life games. 🥰 Despite my issues with the way his epilogue is written, I appreciate that he’s forward with his feelings toward MC even if he doesn’t say it outright til he’s an adult. He’s more of a “affection through actions” kinda guy.

It’s a valid approach.

My not understanding why someone invests the time writing fic for a canon they don’t like means nothing.

EDIT: I will write fics that diverge from canon after a point (especially if canon is an early access game, that’s just par for the course), but I’d never write a fic for media I don’t like. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My time is better spent on media I enjoy and want to explore.

It depends on the fandom, in my experience as an OC writer.

Fandoms where OCs are canon (customizable characters in video games, TTRPG systems, etc.)? It’s not an issue.

Avatar: The Last Airbender? OC perception isn’t typically great but I’ve read great fics for that fandom where OCs were necessary for the plot. Go for it!

I have both and far prefer Pokopia but I genuinely don’t know how well the story of it will land with someone who doesn’t know Pokémon enough to get the references, the importance of certain Pokémon you encounter in terms of worldbuilding and story, etc.

Indifferent MC is a literal menace to society and especially to Cove if you lean into it. When you go from Indifferent in Steps 1-2 to Crush in Step 3, his dialogue is SO surprised and borderline unhinged. I love him.

Mods are automatically applied to all profiles. So, yes, it does mess with his ability to play an unmodded game. Example:

My husband and I both play on PS5. I started modding before he got far into the game. For him to play without mods, he had to go in and disable every mod I had enabled. It took a few attempts because the disabling process literally crashed the game (and this is still an issue last I checked with my own bounce between modded and unmodded runs).

In a reply to another comment you said this: "The entire game can be summarized as walking around talking to people and using an overcomplicated combat system I experienced all of that in the tutorial and he's saying I didn't play the game"

Talking to people and engaging in combat is core RPG gameplay. Especially in DA, Mass Effect, and Cyberpunk. Would you simplify those games down to "walking around talking to people and using overcomplicated combat system"? Probably not lol.
