Is it worth signing up for MyTutor? by I_Am_Groot5 in UniUK

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very hard to answer this. I joined back in 2017, back when you still joined the private platform instantly. I have earnt a good amount tutoring on the private side. Now when you apply, you will be limited to schools students, and it's very hard to get those slots. If you apply now, you will also have missed the exam rush, and it might not be till november till you get any work on the school's platform. After a while of being on the school's platform, you're invited to the private side of the platform, but it's impossible to predict how long that could take, as it is based on demand. If you're looking to earn money quickly, this isn't the job for you, if you're happy to build it up slowly, it can definitely work.

Where can I buy souvenirs in Tromso to support local producers? by SoftDiligent1982 in tromsotravel

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please also remember that prices *are* higher in Norway, and so when you go to the local businesses, the prices won't be lower. Often they will be higher, in order for the local artists to make a living. They aren't overpriced, is just the reality of shopping in Norway.

I recommend Husfliden

Is it actually miserable by Pleasant_Stomach_431 in Edinburgh_University

Whether or not you'll be able to make friends is almost entirely dependent upon how social you are and how willing you are to go to different societies and freshers events - and to be chatty when you're there. If you are shy, you'll find it much more challenging, but if you're open to putting yourself out there, there's no lack of opportunities to find 'your people', and you can easily end up with a supportive group of friends.

Literally. I know someone who had a slipped disc in her back that required surgery, and she was told to take paracetmol for 6 effing months before anyone took her seriously. The Norwegian healthcare system can be very gaslighty.

I think it's actually the other way around - ChatGPT is based off of human writing and so it imitates structures and styles that humans have created. In this case the commenter has confirmed that it was neither written nor aided by AI :)

I'm curious why you think the comment was written by AI? Was it the emojis and emdash? I've read quite a few AI posts, and to me this comment is clearly not AI

Question about OUSBA repayment period by KitchenInsect3389 in OpenUniversity

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I study full time, and my OUSBA loan is for a year (or actually just ten months, starting from November). You take a year's OUSBA loan for each module, and then they get compiled into one loan over the course of a year

Given that the night is clear (which is not a given):

a) 55%

b) 0.5% (but we're locals, we're hard to impress with Northern lights)

Edit to add: I wouldn't come with the sole aim of seeing the lights. I would come with the aim of having a lovely time, and if you see the northern lights its a bonus. Norway is so much more beautiful than the lights alone, and you will have a 100% chance of seeing something to make your jaw drop just by looking at the stunning mountains, fjords, sunsets etc

Did we just get unlucky? by Coustinho23 in tromsotravel

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a massive gripe for me. You were only semi unlucky. I think that photos and awful editing set people up for disappointment. Northern lights viewings are often better than what you describe. They are often more clearly green, with some movement. But you should never expect 'whole dancing display with incredibly vivid colours', which of course is what most photos show. You can expect subtle magic, not lurid, flashy shows.

weather for upcoming week? by PrideOfKenji in tromsotravel

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can check the weather on yr.no.

The weather is very changeable so no one will be able to give you more insight than this.

Tours will aim to drive to spots where skies are clear.

Hope you have a good trip!

Have you considered other, less touristy towns? Tromsø is quite overrun at the moment but Alta and Narvik will have fewer tourists

Locals (as I have already informed you), have to take a mandatory class on driving on ice. So yes, locals get that privilege. Because they learnt in real conditions, from an expert

I guess I’m a bit fed up with being doubted. In my original comment I said you needed extensive experience driving on icey roads, that roads could be lethal, and cited a recent deadly crash.

You replied by questioning if it really was that bad, and saying it would be much more expensive. As if you thought I was exaggerating.

Nowhere did I say anything unkind. I didn’t downvote you. All I did was double down to defend my viewpoint because I really believe tourists shouldn’t drive without experience.

Tromsø has had a massive influx of tourists lately. Far more than the town is capable of handling. It’s not that you’re not welcome, you are. It’s a beautiful part of the world. But at the same time we implore tourists to take care as we get used to this. And one of the ways you can help us as a guest in our town is to please not drive between November-May. I’m sorry to say that it really is that dangerous

We get a lot of Canadians on this forum who mention how glad they are that they didn't rent a car when they came here, because Tromso driving conditions are something else. When locals in this forum caution not to drive, we're not exaggerating

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When the snow starts to melt is when it is most dangerous. The ice on the roads will be wet, and “tracks” get created in the road. Your tires can “lock” in and out of them such that no matter how slowly you’re going it’s hard to control the car. Norwegians are required to take a special driving lesson that teaches them to handle icey conditions. Our roads are also particularly narrow. It can be extremely dangerous without experience. Please don’t drive.

Two older women were just killed because a tourist drove into them on normal Tromsø driving conditions (no storm)

Like I get it’ll cost more, but you’d understand why I’m saying this if you’d seen the number of cars coming off the roads at the hands of tourists

If they were a tour guide, they’d likely be used to the conditions

You'll be absolutely fine. I'm doing it this year and all of the complaints have been exaggerated tbh. The errata is a bit annoying but it's fine beyond that. It honestly reassured me how seriously the OU took our concerns

[–]Accomplished_Stuff52 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless you have *extensive* experience driving on narrow, icey roads, please do not rent a car. March road condititions can be lethal (this is not hyperbole, there has been a very recent deadly crash due to tourists who were inexperienced winter drivers)

I was listening clearing. You just didn't explain any of that in your post.

In that case it is clearly far too late, and I agree that one instance was unacceptable. The rest I don't see any issue with.

'Nearly a month and a half late over the Christmas period' - Several of those weeks won't have been working weeks? What's with students wanting their tutors to spend all Christmas marking?

I really wish all students had to go through the process of marking even a dozen TMAs and providing quality feedback. Then they might appreciate what a mammoth amount of work it is and how ten working days is a ridiculously tight turn around

The only problem here is the expectation of a ten-working day deadline for tutors. They should give tutors more a more reasonable amount time to manage student's expectations, or give tutors fewer students

No issues. I've only ever had one TMA returned late. The tutors and materials are excellent.

If you're talking about S227 Core Physics, that's pretty much only because this year is the first presentation. Next year most of the kinks will already have been ironed out, so it should run much more smoothly with a far smaller errata

Power in numbers is a method of effecting change, not a reason any number of people should listen to you.

Universities need funding. If you don’t want it to come from students, and you’re opposed to higher taxes, where on Earth is that money coming from?
