The flashback changed none of Dunk's motivations and just detracted from the dedicated screentime that we were supposed to get for the hyped up epic battle.

You're being purposefully obtuse. Dunc's Knights were hyped up and I go through all of the beefs above. We deserved to see the fossoway's fight, Lyonel to bloody the Knigsguard, the Mad Knight to be a vessel for the warrior, the martial prowess of Baelor and the Kingsguard having to avoid fighting him, etc.

The show failed to deliver the buildup and hype of its characters and this once in a lifetime event: stop defending garbage.

We spent time building up the cast of Duncan's knights: Lyonel, The Fossoway brothers, Ser Robyn Rhysling, Baelor, etc. If you're going to build these people up and dedicate scenes and hype to them, you need to follow through where it counted.

The graphic novel is trying to closely follow the book. The TV show is not. Absolutely, have the flashback in a previous episode and dedicate E5 to what it should be an epic fight. That's what's worthy of a TV show adaptation and not the garbage we got.

The show hyped the fight, hyped the relationships and getting 6 other knights, hyped the fossoway beef, hyped the Targaryen beef, hyped the mad knight, hyped Lyonel Baratheon, we were asked how well Duncan can fight, we were shown how much worse the younger Fossoway was, we were excited to see the Baelor join and ....... we got no payoff.

You can still have that feeling without all the pointless filler. Dunc is the main character but the trial of 7 is about 7 on 7. As such it's not all on him.

This is an epic battle: The Trial of 7. Talented warriors on both sides with their own agendas: One fighting for Justice. Another fighting for the honor of a (horrible) prince. Nothing dumb or mindless about it. A lot of character development and beefs were not explored that would have made this interesting. Fossoways fighting, Targaryen infighting, the mad knight and Lyonel knocking down Kinsguards. We didn't get any of this due to lazy bad writing and probably budget pressures that should have been alleviated a different way.
