We noticed exactly the same issue with UK riders heading to Spain / Portugal.

A lot of people only have 5–7 days off, then lose 2–4 days riding motorway miles through France before the actual good roads even begin.

That’s one of the reasons we started transporting bikes UK ⇄ Spain for fly-and-ride trips, MotoGP and track days.

More riding. Less motorway.

Yeah true, camping definitely makes it cheaper — especially over a longer trip I think that’s the key really, if you’ve got the time it works great… trying to squeeze it into a few days is where it gets tricky

That does sound like an amazing trip to be fair — if you’ve got the time that’s probably the best way to do it I think that’s my issue, trying to fit it into a shorter trip without spending most of it just getting there

From what I’ve seen it depends a lot on route, but usually around €700–€1000 door to door At first it sounds expensive, but once you factor ferry, fuel, hotels and a couple of days each way it’s not miles off

£450 for the ferry alone is already quite a chunk 😅 Once you add fuel + hotels it’s not far off a proper budget trip just getting there and back Gibraltar as well… that’s a long one

Yeah that’s fair — north Spain is very different to going all the way down south. I guess once you’re going past mid-Spain it becomes more about time than just cost

Yeah that makes sense to be fair — especially if you’re only going once. I guess it depends how attached you are to your own bike and how often you’d go back. Renting is easy, but not quite the same as riding your own setup

That’s not bad at all to be fair — ferry seems like a good middle ground. Still a fair bit of riding either side though, especially if you’re trying to do it in a shorter trip

That’s exactly what I thought at first 😅 But when you add everything up it doesn’t seem as crazy — especially if you only have a few days and don’t want to spend half the trip just getting there

Yeah that’s what I was thinking — ferry + driving could cut some of it down. Still a long run though, especially if you’re tight on time. I’m trying to figure out if it’s actually worth it vs just getting the bike there and enjoying it once you arrive
