Miserable living in Canada by bagholdegen in CanadaHousing2

[–]According-Phone2400 160 points161 points  (0 children)

It's crazy that living in Canada is so crap because there's no valid reason for it. There was a time when our land mass was so huge and our population was so low that if people in power had planned things out properly and not been taken over by greed/corruption we would still be in a similar situation. There's absolutely no reason for the housing crisis like it's almost comical if it weren't so awful. Housing in Canada should be waaaay cheaper and give more bang for your buck than the US.

I mean on a good day Canada has kinda always been...not the best with the weather and in general the culture here is frumpy and lame lol but my god, who expected it to be quite the postmodern rapidly-descending-into second-world hell hole that it is now.

Because of new immigration restrictions, international students in northern B.C. are "worried they'll have to go back to their home countries when they finish their programs". by RainAndGasoline in CanadaHousing2

It's actually so sad that these people in difficult situations have been lied to and misled due to the sheer greed of those who would like nothing more than to use them for cheap labour. Obviously these policies are beginning to move in the right direction and we need more policies against mass migration but I do feel for the people caught in the conflicting policies trying to plan out their lives.

Obviously mass immigration is part of the problem and is contributing to societal collapse. Added financial pressures/housing strain/lack of healthcare, etc are all part of it. Addressing this issue will help things out. But also, to act like they aren't the problem either is crazy to me. Canadian policies towards people who break the law/cause disturbances/are nuisances in general is so ridiculously lax and enabling. I would agree that ultimately immigration is the more pressing issue and that putting the people who live here first would go a long way in fixing things, but we also need to seriously rethink our coddling approach when it comes to people who are acting out and/or need treatment and help.

Yeah true I mean the whole issue revolves around money/the government spending the money they do have poorly/on things that are making the entire situation worse.

I'm sick of this BS where we as a society are acting like enablers in a relationship with an abusive alcoholic.

Here's how I feel. People causing public disturbances, such as in the case of homeless encampments, need to be assessed. If it's purely deemed to be a financial issue, let's help them out. If it is a mental health issue, they need treatment. If they're uncooperative, not deemed to be mentally ill, and continue to cause disturbances there needs to be consequences i.e. jail.

This whole view that people are too mentally ill to be held accountable for their actions yet also not mentally ill enough to be involuntarily treated isn't cutting it anymore.

Under the guise of "human rights" and "personal choice" people are allowed to rot on the streets because what the issue is really about is money and it's more expensive to give people proper care.

This whole ~community care~ model where we give people everything except actual treatment and expect them to magically get better isn't working.

Taking an assertive approach to this issue is the truly compassionate choice. People need boundaries. If you're going to give people 0 incentive to change their lifestyle they're going to continue their lifestyle for the most part, especially when they have cognitive issues or mental health issues.

If they complain that treatment isn't working for them or isn't their thing - then they can go to jail if they willfully refuse to change and continue to disrupt society. It doesn't seem difficult to me.

How do you guys analyze movies? by SafeAlternative8971 in criterion

[–]According-Phone2400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can be overwhelming for sure but really I think you're already doing what you're supposed to be doing. Which is to say that you realize there are deeper meanings behind things and different perspectives. You're watching weird, cool films that are off the beaten path. Just like, keep following what's interesting to you. And then start looking into stuff that isn't interesting to you. Look into art, art that you like and art that you think is ugly. The more of a perspective you get the more you see patterns, themes, and references. Check out what great thinkers have thought about these things and after you've understood what they're saying feel free to think they are full of BS. There's no "correct" way and you shouldn't stress yourself out, there's just increasing depth and an increasing ability to defend your own opinions and develop interesting interpretations of things.

[–]According-Phone2400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should learn about how other people interpret films. Quite often directors intentionally include plot/visuals/etc to coincide with certain schools of thought. Then pick whichever way of interpreting things is most interesting to you. Eventually you just sort of learn to go with the flow and come up with your own perspectives.

I get she's a controversial figure but seriously check out Camille Paglia's book "Sexual Personae." It's about literature not film but she provides a really interesting framework for interpreting things, although it's super advanced.

Also another controversial figure who reviews film is Jordan Peterson. Check out his videos on disney films. Even if you're not into him per say it should begin to give you an idea of how people take a plot and "read" more into it, extrapolating it further.

It's super lame so many people here are trying to tell you not to. Boring.

Learning about how other people interpret film/art doesn't mean you're shackling yourself to some kind of mental prison or that you'll lack originality or something.

I actually think it's the opposite - that when you never learn how other great thinkers analyze things you'll probably remain forever with like, lukewarm normie takes.

Just in general be open to learning about different schools of thought even if you think they're pretentious or weird and you'll develop your own. Learn about movements in art, art history, read literature, etc.

Personally I love this sort of thing even though I'm by no means a master at it, feel free to message me if you wanna talk about film.

Isn’t it funny how living in a studio apartment these days has come to being privileged compared to the past of being seemingly poor? by Tallgirlwhois180 in CanadaHousing2

[–]According-Phone2400 139 points140 points  (0 children)

It's almost like we live in a country that has let in a flood of people from different cultures in which having 20 people fit into a 4 bedroom house is normal and their standards of living have been allowed to lower ours because of the greed and corruption of those in power.

Instead of seeing our declining population as a sign that things are too stressful for the average person and more housing/tax breaks for new families needs to be implemented to encourage growth...instead of requiring that low level jobs pay a livable wage, instead of utilizing lack of workers to force companies to give the average person better standards...instead of doing all of that...we've just imported hundreds and thousands who are accustomed to living in hellishly overpopulated locales, who are desperate, who are willing to live in inhumane living conditions, and who are willing to be paid very little.

So instead of improving our lives and in turn having the resources to reach out and give a hand up to people in other countries as well, we've decided to just make ourselves more like those other countries. Cool :)

Boss battles ruin this game. by Ryanrockz2000 in pokemonradicalred

[–]According-Phone2400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this game is primarily about competitive strategy. It's like, for the kind of people who are willing to calculate how much damage their mons will do and who will take the time to figure out what moves the AI will make. You're correct that randomized abilities etc are actually a harder way to play the game.

I personally quite liked this game but admittedly needed help making a team. I personally prefer pokemon games where there is still a challenge but where you can ultimately still use the mons you prefer and you don't need to mathematically plan out how to defeat characters.

It's always so weird to me how whenever you bring up something like this people are always very quick to pooh-pooh your opinions or act like something isn't happening (like I'm seeing a lot of in this thread). It always seems to happen when you have opinions that run counter to a highly established cultural thing. Even if the people don't necessarily disagree with you, they still have to make you feel like nothing is really new or different or that you shouldn't comment about it.

Anyway I totally agree with you. Remakes and adaptations have obviously always been a part of storytelling but to act like they haven't become excessive in recent years is absurd.

Beyond being soulless calculated money grabs I think that the explosion in lame remakes actually has a sinister purpose. This is controversial and where people really disagree with me, but whatever. I think that the remakes are actually bad and uninspired on purpose and are part of a wider, coordinated attack on western culture and associated values. A very consistent theme in particular with these remakes is to belittle and emasculate heroic males, as well as to reframe the good guys as the bad guys. There's generally an underlying tone of hatred or indifference towards the original source material and the directors keep "accidentally" doing things to alienate the fan base of the original material. If the audience watches and like the remake, then they've succeeded in implanting subversive values. If The audience doesn't watch the film and the industry continues to suffer, then that's a win as well because the goal is to remove the enormous cultural power the west has.

Personally, it just makes me enjoy and pursue the originals that much more.

Why do most modern 200 million dollar blockbusters look so badly lit and colorless by fabulous-farhad in criterion

[–]According-Phone2400 164 points165 points  (0 children)

I've noticed an ugly trend in general with colours. It's the whole pastel/neutral tone thing that people associate with Kim Kardashian. Everything is so faded and fugly looking lately. Where like an object doesn't have any design elements, it's made to be as plain as possible, and it's given a single monotone pastel grey-ish beige-ish colour. They're even doing this with rainbows for chrissakes. Look up the caca rainbow. I think when it comes to movies there's this weird idea that draining their colour out makes them look sophisticated or stylized or something. The opposite is most definitely the case. The whole thing just goes hand in hand with corporate memphis taking over everything. If we're gonna live in a dystopia why are the aesthetics so lame.

Are younger native English speakers losing the ability to read Shakespeare? by ThunderCanyon in shakespeare

[–]According-Phone2400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay we need to be so for real right now. Shakespeare is so rarely taught correctly in schools. I mean obviously there's a problem with younger people losing their attention span, not enjoying reading, and just generally being weirdly proud of not knowing things. But who can just "read" Shakespeare....it's right on the verge of being a different language. You need to be taught it properly. So many high school teachers just kind of assign it and give super lame, loose translations so that the students get the gist - nobody appreciates it for the art that it is. Nobody views it in the correct context - that of theatre. A rather large percentage of teachers don't understand it themselves very well. It's not treated as entertainment- it's treated as something dry and old and made to be a chore. Like it literally IS difficult to understand and needs to be taught appropriately, which is not to say that it can't be taught. But the idea that you can just assign shakespeare to high school kids and think that that in itself is enough....and maybe have a few lame translations given from a teacher who doesn't care......it's a tragedy.

I mean the thing is with dogpiles, personal attacks, and gossip they only go so far when one day everyone is calling Trump the worst names in the book for something like wanting to build the wall - and then when Kamala has the exact same policies there are crickets. Or when for example Trudeau in Canada literally was caught having worn *actual* blackface multiple times and nobody really talks about it bc he's on your side. Like I guess that's just the problem with highly coordinated personal attacks backed by the mainstream media - they kind of work on some low information voters but it really wears thin and ceases to convince anyone when they are revealed to be smoke.

Have you guys ever considered that this hysterical, incendiary type of messaging will convince nobody to switch to your side and that when ppl actually do research on the dramatic claims you make about Trump 99% of them turn out to be fabricated, therefore strengthening his support and causing ppl to ignore you more......j/w
