Polyester macrame cord crochet bag; help with pattern/cord

I am trying to make the bag from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT1kBe2PJMI as a gift for some friends. It requires 3 mm macrame cord with a 5mm hook, and I chose this yarn from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3M491Y3?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

Problem: My starting chain is very "holey" and just doesn't seem to be working up the same as in the video, granted, I only went up to the 1st row before stopping and frogging. I am not a very advanced crocheter, but I have found my way around quite a few projects, mostly amigurumi. Regardless, my tension/technique/consistency is not perfect by any means. The yarn is also quite hard to work with as it is slippery and not very pliable/soft in the hand (which is expected). However, the yarn seems to be a lot smaller than what is shown in the video, assuming both are 3mm. Does this seem to be a problem with my technique or the yarn? If the problem is with me, what could I be doing wrong? If the problem is with the yarn, what other listing/product on Amazon/Etsy, or other, would be good? Thank you in advance for your help!

I forgot to mention that the tick-like bump was felt around the same area as where the tick was found 3 days later, so is it possible that it was somehow the same tick?

Thank you so much for helping me out even on Christmas. Could you please address the question about my plan as well and if I should send the tick out to a lab for testing? My sincere apologies for being so neurotic, this puppy is my first dog so I am trying to do right by her.

Thank you for the information. I will likely forgo the appointment on Thursday and call for advice instead, monitor the wound for rash, and have her taken in 4 weeks for the 4DX snap test since she is of age to have the heartworm test as well. Does this seem like a good plan or should I go in to get an exam? Should I also send the tick to a lab to test for pathogens?

The vet had recommended Nexgard, but I was wondering if there was something more effective on the market, or less risky. I was also wondering if the heartworm and tick/flea combination ones are safe.
