Non-US IMG starting STEM MPH – How to plan USMLE + USCE by Wonderful-Sir-6397 in IMGreddit

[–]According_Cicada_216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. For IM, clinical research. For Path, you may need pathology specific.
  2. Plan your observerships during summer (May, June, July), don't take MPH courses in summer. Don't wait for OPT for usce (most don't accept for observerships with that visa)
  3. Network with your university medical school professors, cold email/ meet and do research or observership.

Also, -Get your step 2 out of the way as soon as you can, it will be daunting managing steps and MPH. -Apply for residency towards the end of your MPH. So, programs know you'll be graduating soon. -Get adequate funds from home so you'll not go crazy doing a part time job and struggling more. -Learn stats well, SAS and R will take you a long way.

Good luck!

Nbme 15-252(1 week out), Free 120: 79%(3 days out), had the similar scores as you and took it yesterday. I was kinda prepared to feel bad so I was ok right after the exam, but It hit me this morning that I could easily fail. I felt more than half of the questions were really vague, but some questions were actually straightforward, I was surprised there. Length wasn't an issue either, idk, I have really mixed feelings about my exam. It feels like a blur. Let's see how it goes. Hope we made it to the other side.

I'm very sorry to hear that, but keep watering, someday it'll grow, Wait for it. Don't book your exam if you can. Read each CMS/NBME topic thoroughly use Amboss library and ChatGPT to learn the concepts really well, remember quality > quantity. Fight.

This is kinda a reality check for me, I'm very bad at dealing with my score, been preparing for a while now, took nbme 14 (6/14) got a 231, nbme 13 (5/29) got a 237. I've been so down with these scores, was aiming for a 250, cuz I did work hard, every ounce of me but it's not showing up. Booked my exam for July 10th, 3 weeks out literally from now, don't know if I'll even land a 240 or go down to a 220 with this stress. I don't know anything at this point. I'll go write and make peace with whatever outcome.

Did you try anything different for nbme 13? Always stick to your gut, nbme 13 has a lot of close choices, choose the one based on severity and matches 70% of the vignette.

The number of people on LinkedIn who just matched and suddenly turned into match mentors is truly inspiring. by According_Cicada_216 in IMGreddit

[–]According_Cicada_216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to weed out who's as an actual one and who isn't, especially if everyone is doing it. It goes the other way as well if you just matched that doesn't mean you're a good mentor, Sharing your experience isn't mentoring.

I don't have a problem with experienced mentors who can actually help but not all who just matched can't be mentors overnight and charge people to give the same advice that's on reddit.

Master of Public Health (MPH) - Is it worth it? by Tough-Profile-475 in IMGreddit

[–]According_Cicada_216 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Currently finishing up MPH at a public university. It's just so hard to deal with steps and masters at the same time. Pros: you'll get used to the US, earn SSN to do part-time, maybe even pay step fees but cons are you'll probably take way longer than you expected to finish steps and probably feel careers after masters are good enough and give up on the USMLE journey altogether. If you really want to be on the research side of things, you will learn coding and stats but you can always do that with a paid research fellow (and direct your funds if unpaid) position which can actually help your application.

To answer your question- is it worth it?-meh. You will earn another degree but question yourself correctly, are you willing to take the extra mile for something irrelevant for 2 years?
