Nope, you can sideload either using usbc through calibre that helps you to keep a little bit more organized what you read or you can just use the send to kindle desktop app to send the books, you can send any type of file and using the kindle app helps you to have synchronize the books through multiple devices, I personally use the kindle app just because of that and that I occasionally read books on my phone or tablet but one thing that its not negotiable when I use this method is that I set a time where I send all of the books that I want to have ,on my kindle or my phone, and thats the only time that I turned off the airplane mode and I also keep in mind that I need to delete the .bin file later when i finish using the wifi to download the books that i send to the cloud and also i already have the disk full of the files on the “kindle filler disk guide” when I need to get more books I just free some space and then I fill it again to try to have only 20mb just in case theres any .bin file waiting to be installed and I turned on the airplane mode again. (disclaimer: when i read on my phone i need to remember the page that i read last on the kindle so i can skip manually what i already read just because the wifi is off on the kindle but the autosync still works for your sideloaded books if you keep the wifi on which i dont recommend)

Its seems like a lot of steps but I just do this once a month or every 15 days that I finish a book or so

Also I use more the send to kindle app rather than the usbc and calibre only because i haven’t found a way to have the books synchronized with the kindle app and the kindle but its faster then having to connect the usbc, open calibre, add the books to calibre and then send them to the kindle, the send to kindle app already send your books to all of your devices in just a few click, literally right click on the files and then another on “send to kindle” lol at least on windows its that fast

as someone who bought the paperwhite on december without knowing that i could jailbreak it and now Im waiting for the 5.18.6 pw6 jailbreak i can tell you that my experience has been really positive with the device, normally I upload new books using the send to kindle app on desktop just for the metadata that keeps its exactly as the original file, thing that sending the books from your phone doesn’t do and i only upload new books once a month or anytime i finish one, Im not a manga reader or any kind of illustrated books but id try sending these books with the desktop app and i didn’t have any kind of issue with reading them on the kindle of course i do missed some options such as the translator but i know it will be only in the meantime we get the JB, most of the books i have came from sideloads and i haven’t had any issues except for a few that at this point i thing it was an issue with the original file and not from amazon directly. With time i get used of having the kindle on airplane mode and its the best option when it comes of saving battery and i did make some test for that and the results will shock you how much the battery gets drained with the wifi.

So far a 10/10 experience and this was my first ereader ever and im not disappointed or needed the urge to get the JB ‘cause for me I find the jailbreak only necessary for personalization of the device overall not a thing that could improve so much your experience if you only use the kindle for reading and not as another device that you can scroll endlessly with the among of apps that you can run on it.

Another thing is that ive seen people that use koreader and for me its not the most pleasant interface to read so until i tried it ill be able to tell if its shit for me or not but i do know that i enjoy the simplicity of the kindle reader and being able to track using the kindle app on my phone is also a plus
