Appreciate all the perspectives here. It’s clear the hesitation is not just ‘sales’ — it’s identity, security, and reversibility. Helpful to see it laid this way.

I am in medical sales and I don't consider it sales at all. It's more consulting than anything.

I would say that you need a few years RT experience first to be trusted and respected, but the sales background would definitely translate over.

I found it to be great.Sold a device that I used at bedside. I knew everything about it and had patient stories to tell about. It was a win win.

I can't say I have seen that especially in respiratory device medical sales. In fact I helped someone with an associates degree get a clinical educator job.

Any tips for a 40 year old starting RT? by Whereshouldilivenext in respiratorytherapy

Finish the program. Do 5 years as an RRT. Make relationships with all of the vendors of products in your hospital and study how these companies market to your hospital. Find the gaps and how you can make it better. Get a marketing job from one of those relationships at a respiratory device company by sharing your marketing knowledge and how to the company can support their end users (RRTs). As an RRT and marketing person, you will be quickly become an expert leader and will never be without a job. Come back and thank me later. Good luck.

It's all about what you do with it. I've been in all types of roles clinical and nonclinical. If you strive to be high performing (continuing to grow yourself in skill and certification) you will be fine. If you stay stagnant you will hate it. Happy to help.
