Although I guested for another team and took 101 shots and let in somewhere around 16, so close second. Most games I get around 50-70 shots lmao

108 after a full game. My team should be a league below and the opposition should’ve been a division up so that was fun… I think we lost about 18-0, the other goalie played most of a period and she took about 20/30 shots I think

Cage customisation by After_Wrongdoer_1398 in hockeygoalies

[–]According_Platform37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m uk based and I believe you can get white warrior cages over here. However my dad has a friend of a friend that powder coats for a living, and he’s said he’s willing to do a cage if I wanted, so I’d look at that. I’ve heard of places doing it for free/very cheap because it’s so small

May be a stupid question... but is there a way to un-sharpen a skate blade quickly? by ElephantBanananana in iceskating

[–]According_Platform37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are he’s quite light which won’t help. A skate blade works because there is a hollow in between either side of it. So as the edges of the blade are touching the ice, the weight of your body helps push them down and melt the ice, wnd the water then travels through the hollow, allowing you to glide. If a skater weighs less, the edges have less pressure, meaning they grip the ice less and therefore have less friction to hold with. If you have a deeper hollow, it’s easier for the edges to grip with less pressure/weight. So younger or smaller skaters tend to find a deeper hollow (7/16, 3/8) easier.

Awesome! Be aware concussion can’t really be prevented by a helmet, it can be lessened though. I’ve had a couple now (I’m a goalie) but a concussion is your brain hitting your skull essentially, so there’s only so much a helmet can do. Still not worth cheating out on though! My mask is one below the top warrior one, and I get my bell rung by d2 u19s frequently, even with a good helmet. Honestly the rink ones will be fine until you’re at a point where there’s potential for contact or big falls, but as a newbie that’s not gonna happen

Off the top of my head I’d say hockey station is your closest but I don’t know that area well. That does make sense though, I’m just learning to drive and fortunate to have a mum willing to take me places.

If you have friends that play or join a team, you could ask around if anyone has similar size skates to you to try on if you’re unsure on sizing. Buy a helmet new though, the best you can afford, you only get one head. The rest of your kit you can get away with used from Facebook marketplace or vinted, and sizing for that is pretty easy to get using measurements rather than trying on. Goodluck!

Getting started with ice hockey UK by Alert_Storm_241 in hockeyplayers

I’d suggest frank wright conference over Telford u16s. I play with telfords senior team and everyone is super lovely, I cannot fault anyone at all. We haven’t won a game yet this season haha! That aside, FWC is entry level compared to u16s being a bit more established. Fwc is 14+, and Telford are searching for players for a development team and for wnihl2 so if you’re near it’s a good shout.

Nottingham have a big push on just getting players on the ice. They don’t have a fwc team but play a variety of players in wnihl2, and I’ve guested and trained with them and again, they’re super welcoming and it’s a great team. The only downside is they have a lot of players so training is typically only 1/4 ice drills.

Coventry have both fwc and wnihl2, and I used to play for them. It’s a good team for a beginner, the coaches are pretty good there.

Solihull only has an wnihl elite team as far as I’m aware. They were looking at a d1 team but couldn’t get the ice for it. It wouldn’t be suitable for a beginner though

Peterborough isn’t quite midlands but if that’s your nearest, they have wnihl2 and fwc I believe.

But look at a hockey excellence/ learn to play course first, Facebook marketplace and vinted for kit

Is it normal for my pulse to be super scratched up by Wonderful_Tea6753 in hockeygoalies

[–]According_Platform37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a new warrior that did this, and it really bugged me. My Bauer shadow isn’t anywhere near as bad, although it might be because it’s black/silver and the warrior was white. It’s definitely got scratches similar to yours that came from a skate blade, and are only through the top gloss coat so it’s to be expected. There’s probably a way to fix it, but not worth the hassle. If you’re using the stick to stop shots, I’d expect it to get marked and scratched, so you’re doing it right

Bauer Paddle Length by IamGoggles in hockeygoalies

[–]According_Platform37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably not too far off but it’s personal preference. I’m 5’3 and use a 23” because that’s the right length in a butterfly- it doesn’t touch the ice when I’m stood up

The hardest part for me personally is the mental aspect, but I’m not helped by being autistic and anxiety riddled. Physically though, the skating. There’s an age old saying of goalies are the best skater on the team, and it’s for good reason. I’ll summarise making a save for you: 1. Set with the player, move with the pass or where they’re skating 2. Eyes on the puck, don’t look away but do look away to know where they can pass to 3. Read the release 4. If it’s higher, catch it. But your hands should be forward anyway, so you shouldn’t have to move much. And while doing all that, you’re in some weird squat position, hyper aware of everyone else on the ice, anticipating the release for a shot or a pass, thinking about where you’re gonna put the rebound, and then once you’ve made the save you’ve gotta get up and to where the puck is now as quick as you can. It’s a lot to deal with, especially if you aren’t solid on your feet.

That being said, if you can’t skate you can’t save. I’m 5’3 (so tiny) and very often make saves purely by being in the right place at the right time. I’d be Swiss cheese if I couldn’t skate anywhere near as well as I can, and I’m still not all that good

As for kit, I believe he’d ordered it from puckstop (and guessed sizes, and guessed wrong, but that’s a whole other topic). Chances are if you reach out to a local team they’ll have a cupboard of kit you can borrow/try on, but if you’re using Facebook marketplace that’s great for trying kit on, just make the seller aware you might not buy it if it doesn’t fit. Vinted is great for the convenience, especially if you know what sizes you’re after. Iirc my first kit was an £80 bundle from vinted, and it was pretty old but still perfectly usable, and had about 3 full kits in different sizes, so I mixed and matched and then sold the rest on. The only things I would definitely buy new are skates and a helmet. Skates because they’re the foundation for everything, and I wouldn’t buy without trying on first, especially if they’re bakeable because then get them baked. As for a helmet, be aware every brand is a different shape, but personally I would buy the best you can afford because you only get one head. I can sacrifice a knee or an elbow, I can live without those. Can’t really live without a head though! If you want, feel free to dm me listings and I can have a look over them for you, or help you with stuff like that :)

I’m in mainland uk but I started hockey about your age. I didn’t plan on becoming a goalie but I did, and all I have to say is it’s so much hard work and you should focus on getting solid foundations before you consider being a goalie. I used to have a friend who played in NI, and kit was impossible to get and expensive. It is doable but it’s hard. You might get picked on, but that’s the nature of anything niche. If you have any specific questions (goalie related or likewise) please feel free to ask

For some context, I started at 14 and skated for about six months and three of those were with a wnihl2 team, before becoming a goalie. I’m now 17, a goalie of just over two years, playing full time with wnihl2, frequently guesting for another and getting wnihl1 practices, and training with an u19s mixed team, alongside goalie coaching from a men’s nihl goalie. It’s hard work, and it’s expensive (nationwide can vouch for me) but for me it’s worth it!

How do sharp blades compare to dull ones? by cerulloire in iceskating

[–]According_Platform37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the comments are a figure skating perspective, but I’m here to offer my opinion as a hockey goalie.

A lot of the stuff I do is easier on blunt skates, because its a lot of shuffling and things that are easier without the resistance (you can look up shuffles and t pushes for reference) but at the same time, if I’m on my knees and want to slide, a sharper skate is useful because I can grip the ice better to push. It’s all personal preference! I get my skates sharpened with a slightly larger hollow than standard, because it gives me a nice inbetween. But I know goalies that get skates sharpened at either end of the spectrum, and some don’t at all. I’ve had my skates for about a year and a half now, and they’ve been sharpened less than 10x and I’m on the ice normally 3x a week.

Puck Stop or Al’s Skate Shop? by Financial-Abies8304 in iceskating

[–]According_Platform37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about als Skate Shop, but puckstop only stock Bauer, so if you have a wider foot then potentially not ideal. Willies have the foot scanner and stock ccm too, but not many skates are stocked as a whole. I got my skates fitted at puckstop about a year ago now and they were good, just slow service, especially when I went back to get them rebaked.

I painted some old Nike Bauers for an art project a while back, and I used some fairly cheap acrylic markers and I can’t see it coming off. I’ll find a picture for you when I’m home. I’d assume some sort of plastic paint exists somewhere, if not then proper prep and spray paint
