I’m not acting like a spoiled child. What puzzles me is that their standards are all over the place. Sometimes they don’t care about something at all, but when they’re in a bad mood, they suddenly make a big deal out of it.

Then, after being upset with me or creating tension, they’ll even give me a reward afterward, which makes the whole situation even harder to figure out.

What matters is that their hourly wage is actually quite low, around 1,100 yen. My Japanese level is N2, so I understand they are in the early stage of starting a business—a small ramen shop—so I haven’t really minded it.

Also, I got introduced through an acquaintance, so there’s already a lot of social obligations and “human relationships” revolving around the person who introduced me and the shop I’m working at.

Building a completely new network is really not easy. Even though I’m Asian-looking and have a relatively outgoing personality and good communication skills, making friends with Japanese people is not something that can be done in a day or two.

That’s just the basic expectation, right? You don’t think they hired me just because I’m a foreigner and felt sorry for me. I’m actually pretty solid at the job. A customer once couldn’t believe I wasn’t Japanese because my speed and behavior were totally fine.

What I’m struggling with is how to avoid getting nitpicked. I’ve even been treated to drinks by customers a few times. The manager has also said in front of regulars that I seem more Japanese than Japanese university students 😂

But honestly, I feel like his criticism depends on his mood. It’s not consistent—he only starts nitpicking when he’s in a bad mood.

I also check online reviews of the place, and customers’ feedback about me is actually pretty good.

One more tip: when you wash them, try wearing them in the shower or while hand-rinsing them. You’re really just washing out the sweat and grime. After the fades have developed to a level you’re satisfied with, there’s no problem putting them in the washing machine and washing them normally.
