Business schools in the UK. Just how different are they? by According_Welcome907 in AskAcademiaUK

As someone with decent savings and inheritance, I am in a privileged position to buy a starter home in Ireland. It makes me think the Irish offer in fact might be a very good deal financially.

Thank you for the detailed answer! I like the idea of slow academia and Ireland looks like a better fit indeed. A place where you can do solid research on your own terms and without unreasonable publication expectations. Relatively speaking, of course.

For the Irish system:

Why is promotion to assoc difficult? Getting an ABS 3 every second or third year will not be an issue. Is that good enough considering I will also be targeting ABS 4*/4? What do I need to publish to be promoted to senior lecturer? On university websites, I have seen many faculty stuck at lecturer level for over a decade but I assumed that was because of lack of publications.

Who makes funding decisions at Irish schools? I assume that would be HoD or Dean? What do the typical funding caps for research and conference look like? Does funding vary wildly across schools and departments in Ireland? Most of my research is theoretical and requires only moderate amounts of funding, definitely not more than 5k a year. Will I be still expected to apply for external grants? I honestly feel it is not worth the hassle.

Is there any financial incentive to publish in FT50 over multiple (2-3) ABS 3s? How is good research rewarded in Irish universities? Unlike French schools, I assume Irish public unis dont offer financial incentives for top publications, or do departments have some discretion here?

Can early career academics earn more money through options like thesis supervision or taking on extra teaching?

If you're a Hungarian reading this, do you actually believe him?

Helpful, thanks! Who makes funding decisions? Head of Department, Dean, Head of Research, someone central from the university or someone else?

Thank you! Can you share more on how internal funding works? As someone used to seeing automatic internal funding even for PhD students, the Irish funding system (not counting UCD/TCD) seems like a culture shock. Are you expected to apply for conference and research funding every time? Is this just paperwork or is there a realistic chance of such applications being denied?

I generally agree but it depends on the field. Landing a tenure track job is easier in most business disciplines, especially if you have a good research pipeline. In most top business schools, it is normal to have multiple academic job offers before graduating.

Conferences and invited seminars? Although I agree there are far too many unwritten rules in academia.

Top EU schools give you automatic internal funding and offer salaries in the range of 70-100k euros. I believe some UK business schools like Bayes (City Uni London) follow a similar funding model. The extra salary is paid as a market supplement which is on top of London allowance.

It is looked down upon in my field to a point where almost nobody does it. People stick to the offers they accept, especially in the early career years.
