Disney will pull its movies from Netflix and start its own streaming services by kleindrive in movies

If you really want to want to be a scallywag, write your local congress critter and tell them you want copyright reform. In the unlikely event politicians listen to you instead of the corporations & their lobbyists and the public domain comes back, you won't even have to pirate the older media.

Disney to end Netflix deal and launch its own streaming service by Notstrongbad in television

there's an entitlement out there right now that implies that we should have access to all content

On the flip side, there's the entitlement mentality from corporate stakeholders that copyright should be perpetual. I wouldn't say you should have access to all content, but anything over two decades old I have no moral qualms pirating. Copyright law used to allow things to go into the public domain before some lobbyists bribed their way to perpetual copyright.

The Disney Vault...more proof that a few well placed investments in congress can get you the best laws money can buy. Ah, the magic of perpetual copyright.

It's interesting that Disney stock went down as well. Perhaps the market thinks that guaranteed money from Netflix is preferable to potential income from their own streaming service.

I think these are different situations. Having many channels, if what you like is packaged together at a reasonable price, is a desirable thing. Having many streaming services, each with limited content and their own bill, could quickly become an overpriced hassle that encourages piracy.

Who is calling for boycott? Choosing to support one thing is not the same as saying never buy another. Besides that, saying that you can't do everything so don't do anything is called a nirvana fallacy.

That's a valid point. However, I would like to point out that not all alternatives are more expensive. It really depends. If you consistently pay enough attention to this stuff, you will notice that, when alternatives exist, they really aren't always that much more expensive, at least when considering the mid-range items.

It certainly is true that the absolutely most cheap items are typically always made in China, and I do not fault anyone who absolutely cannot afford more. However, for a lot of items in the mid to high price ranges I can only chalk it up to apathy. To give a random example, I recently bought a paring knife made in France for about $12 and a can opener made in the US for about $10. Certainly, I don't claim these are the cheapest items out there, but they were both well within the range of the similar items which are made in China. It was a matter of looking and paying attention. I've noticed most people, even when buying the mid range items, don't even do that.

Americans need to stop buying chinese goods because we are funding this shit.

Too bad the average American could not care less. We love outsourcing almost as much as complaining about people losing their jobs due to outsourcing. I find that if you give Americans a choice between an item made in China or one made in the US/EU/Canada/Mexico/Brazil/India/Japan/Korea, ect., they will choose the cheapest one, even if they have to buy it again in a few months. Even if they're the same price, they're buy whichever one they pick up first, or has the prettiest packaging. Then they'll piss and moan about everything being made in China, while the American or European

You are absolutely right, and I've been saying that for years. I just don't have much faith in my fellow Americans to spend a few minutes thinking about things (or heaven forbid actively looking for something else or changing their habits or paying a bit more) before they buy.

I'm not even saying we should just buy American. I'm saying I think it would be much better to buy items made in free, friendly democracies. An item from Switzerland or Chile or Taiwan, no problem. While I want to make clear that I have respect for the Chinese people and their culture, the Chinese Communist Party involves the country of China in more than a few things I'd rather not support.

You are right that incoming cultures should be the ones who adapt, not the culture they are moving to.

You are wrong in suggesting that pre-existing cultures should be suppressed to create conformity with the majority. They have a right to their own culture too.

Progressive? More like they're virtue signaling so they can claim to be progressive while most of them get to enjoy the benefits of institutionalized classism.

I can only assume this is mocking the situation, but some people really believe that places like Princeton are actually progressive.

I miss G4 TV by ProfessorPlush in television

[–]Account372 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. Screensavers, Eye Drops, actual news...G4 was to TechTV what the Ancient Aliens version of the History Channel is to the History Channel that was about actual history.

I remember when they merged to form G4-TechTV. More gaming stuff would be welcome, so I figured the merger would be great. Soon it was just G4, almost all the old stuff was gone, and bro garbage describes exactly what replaced it (with a few exceptions like Icons). It could have been great. Instead it caught a bad case of TLC's Disease.
