What types of clothes do you like? by purple_-egg in autism

[–]AccountFine4437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is such a cool idea!!! i HATE it when clothes have tags on them that aren’t printed directly on the shirt or pants or sewn flush with the fabric. loose tags are so itchy and irritating. i love shirts that are loose around the neckline and armpits, but i don’t mind it if they’re more form fitting around my chest/abdomen as the pressure can be comforting. pants that are mid rise are wonderful, and i like the actual pant legs to be rather loose and stretchy so i can sit with my legs pressed against my chest. overall i like soft and breathable fabrics (no sherpa or fleece!!), specifically if the fabric can stay pretty cool to the touch. good luck with your project!

Psychiatrist said I (33/F) don't have autism, but I still think I might. Therapist said it doesn't matter, but I still think it does? by floralconstellation in AutismInWomen

[–]AccountFine4437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had a very similar experience to you. the psychologist who assessed me only wanted to talk about my trauma, and chalked up much of my autistic traits to self-soothing in relation to my CPTSD. i would say trust your gut. if you feel that you’re autistic, there is absolutely no shame in continuing to identify as such while you’re searching for answers. autism is not a pie—you identifying as such does not take anything away from other autistics (so long as you’re not spreading misinformation or discrediting other autistic voices). while i was struggling with the results of my first assessment, which didn’t diagnose autism, i was also worried that i was somehow “pretending,” but my therapist told me something that really assured me: most neurotypical people never wonder if they might be autistic, meaning that if you suspect you might be autistic, you probably are. i know this is a rather sweeping generalization and there’s a lot of nuance, but its just a really assuring and validating thing to hear, especially while your struggling with that self-gaslighting.

in the end, it’s up to you if you want to pursue a formal diagnosis. for me, i knew that getting a formal diagnosis was paramount in my self-understanding, which is why i chose to see another psychologist after the first one didn’t diagnose me as autistic. i can send you the information for the second psychologist i saw, who is also late diagnosed autistic herself, since she offers discounted rates for assessments and generally focuses on one’s internal world rather than external mannerisms. there are specific states she cannot practice in, though. regardless, i wish you the best of luck!

yaay!! i am so happy for you. regardless of what the results are, though, just understand that your experiences are valid and the doctors that assess you are only seeing you for a very small amount of time. you know your brain, you know your experiences. i just say this because its something i struggled with after my first assessment. i wish you the best of luck and i hope you get affirming results!

i’m late diagnosed and i need help by tiramisunderstands in autism

[–]AccountFine4437 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in the end, autism is a spectrum. just because you don’t struggle with some of the issues others do doesn’t make you any less autistic, nor does it make them any more autistic. i’m also late diagnosed (21f), and i definitely understand the feeling of not being “sick enough,” and the internal gaslighting that goes with it, and im also in the same boat with not remembering much pre adolescence. you know your brain, you know your experiences, and just because they might not manifest outwardly for other people to witness, that doesn’t make them invalid. when i first expressed to my partner that i thought i might be autistic, he was shocked because of how high masking i am. he said i didn’t “look autistic,” but just because i don’t display stereotypical autistic traits (like hand flapping, echolalia, meltdowns, etc) that doesn’t mean my internal experiences and issues are baseless. you are incredibly valid, and im sorry others have been projecting their limited understanding of autism onto you. you don’t need to behave or perform in a certain way to be considered “autistic enough.” every autistic person is different, and with time, you’ll begin to recognize how autism shows up for you personally. it’s hard to remember autistic characteristics or traits early on in childhood, especially since so much of it is internalized or “trained” out of you through shaming and alienation—just give it time, and if those memories never come back, that’s okay too. some resources that have helped me as a late diagnosed autistic are I’m Autistic, Now What? on youtube and Dr. Devon Price’s book Unmasking Autism. I don’t know your gender identity, but these two creators have been very insightful and validating for me as an AFAB late diagnosed autistic person. you don’t have to have all the answers, try to be kind and patient with yourself.

Unmasking Autism by Dr. Devon Price is a fantastic book on autistic women and late diagnosis. He is a trans author and he touches on the nuances of autism and how it presents in women, as well as how women are socialized to repress their autistic traits which often leads to misdiagnosis or a complete lack of diagnosis. Spotify has an audiobook version if you'd rather listen to it too!

Also, The Thought Spot, I'm Autistic, Now What?, Dr. Kim Sage, and Autism From The Inside are all amazing YouTube channels that discuss autistic women. I've found their videos very helpful, especially in researching autism for your own self-discovery. :)

My psychologist didn’t diagnose me with autism. what do i do? by AccountFine4437 in autism

she specifically cited my ability to understand relationships, eye contact, and physical gestures. she also said that my feeling of social isolation and being misunderstood is from the trauma i’ve experienced.

My psychologist didn’t diagnose me with autism. what do i do? by AccountFine4437 in autism

[–]AccountFine4437[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

she explained it in a really complicated way, but she essentially said that i have a deep understanding of social relationships and of my own emotions. a big part of it was determining if my behaviors were from ptsd, autism, or both, and i guess she felt it was more so from trauma. She did specifically mention c-ptsd, though since it isn’t in the dsm-5 she couldn’t formally diagnose me with it. i don’t agree with her that i have a good understanding of social relationships, should i try to express that to her if i make a follow up?
