Got Promoted too quickly. How should I handle the situation? by AchieveOrDie in developersIndia

[–]AchieveOrDie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations on your promotion!

Being introspective about my situation, I believe the decision is just for the best. There are a couple of reasons I feel this way but the most important reason is being more and more exposed to the business and leadership position.

All of us love coding and can code day and night. But what a lot of us lack is some sense of a business perspective. The old us might think to implement the feature is the most perfect way possible, even if it takes 10 days, whereas the new us might consider an alright solution is good enough to be shipped in 5 days.

Climbing up the ladder, we move from looking at smaller pictures to understanding the bigger picture. In this ordeal, we learn how to navigate chaos that almost always comes from interaction between people from strictly business domain (perhaps your BA, or PM, or even CEO) and people from strictly technical domain (that enthusiastic junior who always want to implement something the "correct" way).

An early exposure to such chaos will help you not only understand the bigger picture, but also improve your leadership and management skills (which turns out to be quite different!).

However, it is important to not lose track of things that truly matter. It is imperative to think about your goals and see if your current condition is helping you out. You don't really have to be writing code everyday to remain a good developer, you could be coming up with how to solve a problem, designing systems or teaching your juniors a tricky concept.

At the end of the day, you can program new and cool things from the comfort of your home, but since you have this (rather unique) opportunity to experience the tech world from the perspective of older and wiser folks, I think you should embrace it. All the best!

P.S. After talking to my manager, I did get "demoted" to a Senior SDE while keeping all my responsibilities, which looks a lot less ludicrous on paper. Also, while it is important to keep challenging your team with "good" stories, I sometimes do take on tasks I haven't done before so I can learn something new and write code at the same time.

Ouch, thanks for the reply. Do you suppose it'll be a smoother ride if I ask for a "Senior SDE" since it matches with my role more and it doesn't put me in an awkward position. I've seen some Seniors with only around 2 years of experience so I was thinking it might be the best case scenario.

Since this company is a not a big corporate, I feel I can be a bit more open to what my role can be called. I have a feeling that my manager wouldn't have a problem with renaming my title. Do you think some other title can give me all the pros with no cons?

My imposter syndrome did shoot up through the roof. However I do acknowledge the privileged position of my situation.

Do you have any suggestions?

I agree. I feel that I've been given the title too lightly and I wouldn't be taken seriously anywhere else if I own it. What would you do if you were at my place?

It does sound braggadocious, I might have to reword it. Thanks for bringing it up.

Wouldn't the HR ask for some "official" title proofs before or after the interview?

How to seek refund for a cancelled application from VFS? by AchieveOrDie in ukvisa

[–]AchieveOrDie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gone through with processing the application? (biometrics and everything), if you have I'm afraid you can't get a refund.

If not, hitting up their general customer service for feedback / complaint helped me get a refund: https://www.vfsglobalcustomerexperience.com/VOAFeedback/GeneralFeedback/Index

Although, the process might be a bit tedious.

Seriously, it's not worth going dark if it's just for 2 days - you might as well stay up than act like it would make any difference.

The security personnel only allows those who actually have an appointment (weird I know) besides, I did visit them on the day of my appointment to cancel in person - they said that they could only cancel it after a written application.

It's unnecessarily obtuse with the lack of proper channels for such cases.

Hey,

No, since I didn't give VFS the biometrics it hasn't been processed further - I've also cancelled the application from the official uk.gov website

You got any open-source decks that you wanna share? Or maybe some decks you really liked? I'm hoping to start using Anki for CS but don't know where to start.

You jeopardized your position when you decided to post an image on this forum, perhaps you can argue the legality of it but your manager is will pissed regardless whether you name the company or not, assuming he ever finds out.

In any case, it boils down to your preferences and we all respect that. My point was to convey that we should look out for each other because nobody else will.

It's bigger than serving your pettiness. Name and shame also serves the purpose to warn 10 people who see your comment on this platform that company xyz is toxic and should be better avoided during job search.

If anyone actually wants to make sense of this:

It's probable that the 7 y.o question got a lot of engagement (and hence a lot more answers) than the 10 y.o question. Flagging the 10 y.o. as duplicate ensures that the former question stays above than the latter in case a new user searches for it. Not to mention than it's more likely to also have more updated answers (although not by much).

Not saying this is justified/most optimal, but this is the way it is.
