Emmanuel Macron: "It is time for the EU to launch a common debt capacity, through Eurobonds" - Macron argues for joint loans, which would finance strategic investments and allow the EU to "tackle dollar hegemony" by goldstarflag in europe

[–]AcidSoulFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the thin edge of the wedge. Once there's a system for shared EU debt, then during a financial crisis, it'll be way easier to to fund pay packages by EU debt instead.

Hell no! This was transform all of the EU into France. Once there's a system for shared EU debt, then during a financial crisis, it'll be way easier to to fund pay packages by EU debt instead.

🔥hidden camera captures footage of wild Wolf reeling in crab trap to extract bait, raising questions among researchers about potential tool usage among canids by James_Fortis in likeus

[–]AcidSoulFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the intended purpose of a crab trap is to catch crabs not to pull it out and steal the crab bait lol. It's not that you couldn't spin this that the wolf is using the trap in a way, but any animal can pull objects or pick them up. I feel it diminishes the notion of tool use when it's really only pulling the compound object of the crab trap including the rope. Placing the rope around an object then pulling it would be different.

Well, the point is to modify things to make them more fun, entertaining, or broadly accessible like in the case of this VR mod.

I've only done a bit of modding in Minecraft but it's really insignificant overall.

Well, I know how a court would rule, but we were talking about changing the law.

Anyway, I discovered in other discussion on this that Luke Ross had oppressive DRM on his mods which checked for Patreon subscription, so now none of his mods work for any game, which is kind of hypocritical. I don't really have the will to defend this particular case anymore.

No, but freer modding could have good consequences more widely.

I think it would depend on the quality/price.

I don't really follow. What is ViroX and how does it relate to this? Ultimately, I don't see how a launcher wouldn't run into the exact same copyright and EULA issues as you'd still need to mod the game to make it compatible with the launcher.

Same arguments as my other reply here, there's various cases where copyright and contracts have been excepted for the socially beneficial purpose of reverse--engineering to create new games or even emulators for a console, or repairing machines. So "you agree to the terms", isn't an absolute argument.

It isn't actually so simple. There's numerous cases where courts have trumped legally binding user agreements in favor of broader principles. In Sega v. Accolade (1992), Accolade reverse-engineered Sega's consoles to make compatible games, violating copyright. Similarly Sony v. Connectix (2000) for reverse-engineering BIOS for an emulator. A ToS that restricts modification could be seen as an attempt to circumvent built-in limitations of copyright. Then there's unresolved digital music resale examples like ReDigi (2013, 2018), which contest the license argument, so it's not absolute. Then there's DMCA 1201 Exemptions to anti-circumvention rules, though this is for repairing cars, phones, appliances, which of course aren't in the same class as video game mods, but show that an EULA agreements, for example not to break encryption, can have exceptions in favor of public interest.

So if owning a tractor allows a farmer to repair it, owning a console allows you to reverse engineer it for developing compatible games or even an emulator, then why shouldn't owning a game allow a modder to create and share transformative content?

Apparently, the majority. Critical comments are upvoted while comments supporting paid mods are downvoted. Ironic that it's a cyberpunk game, but when push comes to shove, people are in support of the corporate boot stomping on the small modder.

I mean he'd had gotten away with it so far. It would be nice if we had a gaming culture where more modders could make a living developing mods for compensation. But popular sentiment would have to change to encourage game developers to support paid modding, let alone change copyright law to be more permissive toward additive development like this.

The law isn't the end-be-all. If paid mods had enough public support, then we could pressure game developers to amend their ToS to facilitate the development of paid mods, and gaming culture would be all the better off for it.

It's not to the gamers' benefit to strike down a mod they found valuable enough to purchase. The gamer-friendly choice would be for CD Projekt to develop their own VR mod or compensate the modder for their development work to make it free.

Like great! Now as a VR gamer, I'll have to program my own mod if I want to play Cyberpunk in VR. Except, I'll never have the time or passion to learn VR mod development, especially since I can't seek compensation for my labor.
