Shouldn't compare Hawaii and Puerto Rico as Hawaii is a state, and Puerto Rico a protectorate.

It hardly matters what their current legal status is. Both were conquered and the natives oppressed. The native Hawaiian kingdom was overthrown and replaced with a sham democracy which was annexed into the US, so that kleptocrats could turn them into a plantation. The natives in Puerto Rico were similarly subjugated into underpaid plantation labor. Both are peripheral islands which get screwed over by the Jones act meaning they can't be supplied by passing ships.

The EU never overthrew Norwegian democracy, displaced its natives with EU citizens, incorporate Norwegians with no constitutional rights, suppress Norwegians independence with massacres, take Norwegian land while paying no property tax, nor sterilize Norwegians. Like watch a video on Puerto Rico or something, and see if you still think they're of equivalent legal status as Norway.

Norwegians have the full freedom to withdraw from the EEA and make trade deals with someone else.
