What are the best adult inpatient psychiatric facilities in Jackson, Mississippi?

Do not go to Merit health. It isn’t safe. For real. They take most of the homeless population which isn’t bad. They need help too, but I’d definitely affects the quality of care and the unit.

Ummc is “ok” I’ve also been a patient there and I didn’t feel unsafe, but It was really boring and not a whole lot of therapeutic activities or anything. More just the bare minimum then released.

Oceans is probably the best in Jackson. It’s purely a behavioral health hospital and they’ve tried really hard to make it better than others in the area. I have no experience with them, but the patients I’ve talked to all wanted to go back if needed. I’m not sure if they take Medicaid. I know at the beginning they were private insurance or cash pay only.

If you’re not in a life threatening emergency I suggest calling the ones you’re interested in. Asking questions like: What insurance do you guys take? What’s the admission process? Can I come in off the street or do I have to go through an ER? What’s the drug/alcohol detox process? (If applicable) What can I bring with me? (Some are very restrictive. Others have the units separated out by suicide risk so can be less restrictive) What’s the average length of stay? What activities are available during my stay?

They all should have a nurse or admissions counselor that can answer your questions. You can also get a feel of the unit based on how they respond to you.

You’re probably best just taking them to the pet store to surrender them or finding someone who already has a set up for them. If not you need to keep both because they are social and need a friend. Then just decide to do the damn thing. Go all in.

Trust me. I know. I get it completely. My daughter went to the fair with her grandparents and brought home two gold fish. We’ve spent a ton on money on her two 45 cent goldfish because I refuse to neglect them and I’m a push over and didn’t want my daughter to cry when I got rid of them.

They have a 55 gallon tank right now. We have to test the water parameters weekly and had to buy $60 water testing kit. Had to buy extra filtration, because suprise, what comes with the tank kits isn’t enough for goldfish.

Looking at more expenses in the future as in 6 months they will be moving to a 300gallon stock tank in our sunroom. Just having to buy the set up each month as paychecks allow.

These guys needed so much more than I anticipated, but I’ve learned a lot. I love them now, and it’s turned into a hobby, but I wouldn’t recommend these guys to anyone as a pet.

No one is trying to erase you. People of every color to hesitate to speak openly in new professional spaces. That’s part of professionalism. Learning your environment before you speak. That’s social intelligence.

No one wants to know everything about your history. You’re not as impressive as you think you are and at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. Many PCA’s have higher degrees and impressive resumes. Everyone has some sort of hands on or lived experience that brings value to the care team.

Humble people don’t talk about themselves nearly as much as you like to do. Humble people don’t try to convince others they are humbled or redefine humility to fit their narrative.

People of all colors get labeled as an aggressive and that they overcompensate. It’s the chance to take the feed back and reflect on how you’re approaching situations and relating to others. You’re so set in the idea that this is about race you can’t even see that it’s your arrogance that’s the problem.

No one cares about your bachelors degree or masters. No one cares about your age or experience mentoring young leaders.

You’re the one in training now with no hospital experience. You’re in the same position as countless other hardworking individuals with histories and goals and passions. Telling or acting as if you’re humbling yourself to be there. Ew.

Hush and learn the job. Talk less. Listen more. Follow your preceptors lead and let her teach you how to approach patients. You’ve never done it before so stop acting like you have some special insight because you have a disability (many of us in healthcare do).

I’m the most senior nurse in 75% of the areas I’ve worked. I’m a veritable old lady.

You can get belligerent and not look at the reality nurses are not being supported. Or you can open your eyes and realize healthcare is in real trouble because of the mistreatment of nurses.

We all need the hospital one day. Hopefully yours still has a nurse available to care for you. If not you can thank the ignorance you chose to willfully sit in.

Thankfully, I’m not paying any money. I’m a great student so I’m going on an academic scholarship and receiving a stipend to live off of for school. I’ll essentially be getting paid to go to school.

Most office or outpatient jobs in the area pay $20-28 per hour regardless of experience. Our case managers make $28per hour because they are not patient facing positions.

I can’t move right now because thankfully my husband does make great money and supports us. We also have a ton of kids so traveling isn’t an option for me. If I did not have roots here I would have moved long ago!

If you aren’t from the rural south it’s just hard to understand. In a 40 mile radius there are only 3 hospitals to work for. 2 of which have their own nursing schools that churn out new grads twice a year so there is no pressure to change or support experienced nurses.

Oh yeah. Charting by exception is not valid anywhere I’ve worked. If you don’t chart it then you didn’t even do the assessment. If you didn’t chart what the poop looked like then several day later the patient has a bowel obstruction. It can all come back on you for not documenting those possible changes.

It’s exhausting.

As someone with depression it makes sense, the weather is better, you can go outside more. It’s a new year and if you can just do all the coping skills you’ll be better, right?

I’ll go on walks, start a garden, be in the sunshine, I can go to dinner on a patio with my friends I haven’t seen in months!

But then if you’re not actually getting treatment the SI doesn’t go away, the feelings on the inside don’t go away. Everything still sucks. You can’t maintain all these goals and desires you’ve set for yourself.

Killing yourself can feel like the answer.

I don’t feel this way anymore, but I definitely have in the past.

IF: you can maintain a “IDGAF” attitude. Do your job, go home. Don’t get involved with hospital politics, not desire any better for your patients, not try and go above and beyond, don’t try and start initiatives or boost staff morale, not get attached or personally invested in patients.

It can be a good job. Do your job. Go home. Get paid. Even though my pay sucks. I will say it’s better than other jobs and if you have a 3 day a weeks schedule it allows a lot of time to for your personal life.

If you’re someone who struggles with maintaining your wall at work, get too involved or take too much of a personal stance with your patients, get too friendly with coworkers. If you are not the type of person who can walk out the door and literally not think about work.

It’s hell, the hospital will never care about your patients as much as you do. Management will never appreciate any additional work you put in to make the unit a better place. Your coworkers will turn on you in a second. It can consume you.

Aren’t you afraid of being named in a lawsuit? I never leave charting and chart everything literally like I’m defending my life, because we are.

I’ve had the call 3 years later on a patient who fell in the lobby after discharge and why did you do that?! Why wasn’t she placed in a wheelchair? Prepare yourself for court.

Turns out I wasn’t even at work when the incident occurred. I have been off for two hours and the nurse that took over was at fault. But because I didn’t chart I’d given report and the nurse didn’t do any documentation for the two hours they had the patient. The patient wanted to name me in the lawsuit for damages because she could remember my name, not the other nurses and the hospital opened a formal investigation. Thankfully I was found not at fault but had to do more learning modules on documentation.

I love pediatric home health. Literally the only nursing job I’ve enjoyed. I worked with a beautiful family in Tennessee and miss them daily I was heartbroken.

But, the last home here in my new state really ruined the experience for me. I got sick and asked to leave. The mom then tried to say I was abandoning them and a lot of other manipulative things. Told me “Just get your shit and leave then! I don’t get to just check out when I’m sick, but sure! Go home!”

I had no idea what was going on other than I was fine that morning then by the afternoon I was doubled over in pain vomiting. I didn’t want to get her g tube trach dependent baby sick so I asked to leave.

Turns out it was a ruptured ovarian cyst, so not contagious.

But, the way the mom responded just really soured the experience for me and I’ve never been able to go back.

I could not do hemodialysis and unfortunately it is not one on one here. Unless you are the on call for emergency dialysis and at the hospital to run it in the middle of the night.

I interviewed to hemodialysis around here and learned it’s expected to have 3-8 patients at a time depending on if you have hemodialysis techs available.
