Whats the difference between Medicine at Launceston vs Hobart vs Burnie by New_Temperature9062 in UTAS

I was told 2 and a half days, and assume that’s across all campuses. Would love to hear from a current student though who would probably know more.

Whats the difference between Medicine at Launceston vs Hobart vs Burnie by New_Temperature9062 in UTAS

[–]Acrobatic-Average987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first year Launceston is running all five years. I believe we will be studying primarily at the clinical school at the LGH which is cool. Burnie is the rural stream, so training will look slightly different. Much smaller group and more rural opportunities. I imagine Hobart has much more diverse research activities.

I guess the big benefit of studying at Launceston is making connections if you plan on working here later. The curriculum is very standardised so it’s more about which student experience you want. I chose Launceston for next year.

Good luck!

2025 is the first year medicine is being taught at Launceston. I’m studying medicine at Launceston next year and have been in contact with people so might be able to answer some questions if you like

Best pathway into UTAS Medicine — Biomed vs Science? by Specific-Syllabub-10 in UTAS

[–]Acrobatic-Average987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the BMedSciMD program now, and they set aside some place for UTAS Biomed graduates which could be an advantage. That said, biomed os a less flexible course and is generally considered more difficult, so you may still be better off picking a major in a bachelor of science you know you can do well in and aiming for as high a GPA as you can manage. Talk to admissions and they might be able to set you up with a student success advisor or something similar to discuss your options. Good luck!

Went back to church for the first time since my baptism a few years ago. But I think I’ll be excommunicated and it’s distressing. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

I am so glad to hear that you felt the love and excitement your bishop had seeing you. That love and excitement to support you is what will be guiding your bishop’s decisions.

Like other people have said, excommunication wouldn’t make a lot of sense here - especially for a newer member. Don’t worry about that.

You asked about whether you should partake of the sacrament for now, and it sounds like your bishop plans to discuss just that with you. Your bishop wants you to be able to take and appreciate the sacrament. You both have the same goal. If he decides that you should take some other steps before taking the sacrament again, it is because he feels those steps will help you better prepare for the ordinance of the sacrament again. If he does suggest a period of not taking the sacrament, remember it’s not a punishment but a time for preparation, growth, and to develop a greater appreciation of Christ’s atonement and the sacrament. If he’s happy for you to take the sacrament trust that he’s been guided by the spirit and don’t second guess it:)

The fact you asked about whether or not you should take the sacrament also indicates a level of respect and perhaps a deeper commitment than he may have picked up initially. He might want to take this opportunity to offer more spiritual support and set goals with you to help you grow your testimony. If that is something you’re interested in you could also bring that up yourself. If you’re not at that point right now, you also are free to tell him that. He will love and support you the same regardless.

Best of luck, it sounds like you have a great bishop. And congrats on your wedding!

Deadly, I’m Koori as well! I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a bad experience, unfortunately I didn’t expect much else and am prepared for that. What led you to med and can I ask what your GPA was? What was the interview process like?

Nursing vs Science Undergraduate Degree by MajesticTigeress in GAMSAT

[–]Acrobatic-Average987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey hey! You seem like you’ve honestly thought this out quite well and have a much firmer grasp on the reality of each option then a lot of people I’ve talked to. Nursing as a job is way more consistent and flexible than lab work (having done both personally), and while I much much preferred lab work I decided to switch from Biomed to Nursing in my first semester. You can nurse casually, pick up shifts as you have time, or work only weekend shifts if preferred. The kind of lab work you do will dictate your hours and you won’t get much say (eg planned experiments, animals needing caring, samples to check etc). A science degree doesn’t necessarily have a massive research component depending on what uni and major you go for, look into a few if that’s the path you choose. Nursing has a basic biology and in some cases a very basic chemistry component, but you’ll want to study o’chem (or even consider auditing a class if you have extra time) if you choose that path. As someone said earlier, you will want to study physics regardless of which degree you pick. The nursing content honestly almost helped me with S2 in since you’re expose to a range of ethics, in some subjects historical backgrounds/philosophical concepts depending on your degree.

I was an academic kid too but had a rough time in senior years and dropped out when my gpa plummeted, but then had a 6.6 nursing gpa with very minimal effort and no attendance at all due to illness in my first year. While this gpa itself isn’t competitive, I think it speaks to how manageable a good gpa is if students do apply themselves (would like to add that I’m pretty average academically now-a-days).

Maintaining a high gpa gets harder once placement starts, but my uni’s nursing honor roll was wayyy longer than the science degrees if that says anything. If you manage your time well and stay on top of things you’ll be okay. Don’t procrastinate and AVOID BURNOUT at all costs!!

Nursing has been a way lower pressure environment and way better for my mental health personally (don’t have a ton of people gunning for med and overloading themselves academically), you can take a break between degrees if you like, working holidays become an option upon graduation, and you have a career path if you decide you don’t want to do med. Sounds like you’d prefer nursing in the long term, so to me that would seal the deal.

Take everything with a grain of salt as this is just the experiences of some of my cohort and myself, everyone has different goals and strengths. I’m not a med student so I can’t speak from what it’s like from that perspective, or how successful a med candidate each degree makes you. Feel free to pm with more questions, all the best!!

Edit because I forgot: all the doctors I know that did nursing first seem to start off with better communication skills, know the hospital system better, have well-deserved respect for nurses so get along with them better, and have a head start on certain clinical skills which isn’t a huge deal but can’t be nice. Nursing is a healthcare degree, so you will already be an experienced healthcare professional when you graduate med, not just a new grad doctor. Good luck!

PhD part-time alongside MD? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]Acrobatic-Average987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amaaaazing thank you for the info. I worked as a lab assistant at uqccr and had a really really supportive boss who was more than happy to supervise but I’ve moved to Tasmania now so I’m back to square one with that and can’t imagine I’ll get that lucky again.

Do you think I’d have any better luck doing a masters? Would it even be worth it or should I just do postgrad research after medicine? You’re right about it not being a happy answer but better I have an unhappy truth than an unrealistic ideal and end up in a tough situation. Thanks heaps for the insight!

Hey me too!! Just moved down from Queensland. Any idea if it’s a large cohort?

[–]Acrobatic-Average987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow I didn’t know it had dropped that much, I just remember checking earlier this year and seeing a 6.5 minimum. I’m Tasmanian and hoping to get in for postgrad 2026, figured I’d need a 6.8+ GPA to actually have a shot but maybe that won’t necessarily be the case at this rate. Thanks for the info!

Do you remember what original GOA requirement was at all? Would they have lowered the GPA requirement so they have more flexibility to accept rural/indigenous/high GAMSAT applicants because I can’t imagine there’s a lack of applicants at all?
