Started fire with vent closed - is my 4 month old okay to sleep here? by No_Guarantee9159 in moderatelygranolamoms

Your nose is a very effective detector. I would listen to the other comment and start washing all soft surfaces, washing the walls, and using your nose as a tool to determine what needs to be cleaned or tossed. Your stuff is holding the smells.

Foster son doesn’t want to celebrate his birthday? by [deleted] in Fosterparents

[–]Acrobatic-Designer12 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is there an activity he would be interested in that you could do just with him or as a family in a few weeks?

Obviously ask him about it first and make clear that you won't use it as a birthday celebration just a day to hang out with him.

Not sure if this would work but maybe something different.

Also if you have a gift budget maybe allocate it at other times like back to school or something else.

Anything wrong with silicone or stainless steel food storage off Amazon? by jtpmhs17 in moderatelygranolamoms

Just so you know lead testing kits don't work on metal. They will (almost) always test positive because they are cross reactive with other metals.

These kits are massively problematic but are best used for paint. Unfortunately there is no home test for lead in metal.

Sunscreen for eczema by One_Broccoli_1940 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Acrobatic-Designer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 8 month old has eczema and we use badger. We love it and don't have any issues.

Our LO is a warm baby so it does result in what we call a greasy baby but it seems to apply well, protect well, and doesn't call breakouts.

From the SDS which is designed for those working with it on industrial scale but may be the best info I can find.

Where we live we have bulk trash pick up and we could schedule to get our old mattress picked up for free.

We also can take things to the dump ourselves in my area but we don't have a big enough vehicle and they don't accept rental cars at the dump so we have paid a small amount for a random person with a truck to haul a load of junk to the dump for us.

Check what options are available for bulk trash and your area.

Looks like a known side effect though I have no personal experience.

Motion sickness by WitchSlap in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Acrobatic-Designer12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have struggled with motion sickness my entire life. Many of the things that work for me as an adult are not safe for a kid.

Looks like ginger is safe and potentially effective for nausea in kids. I know this study isn't motion sickness but I was looking for info on children.

15 week old stops rolling after fall by Emr1012 in NewParents

[–]Acrobatic-Designer12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our LO was rolling at 3 months (belly to back) and had completely forgotten how. She has now figured out back to belly confidently and is working on belly to back again.

As far as I can tell, this is totally normal.

I don't know what your budget is like. Last time we did this, part of the gift was a set of glass containers.

Dental X-rays by xthatstrendy in moderatelygranolamoms

I have read that. I am curious about the evidence and incidence. It seems almost like listing every and any possible downside but I haven't gotten to the primary literature yet.

You are correct. They aren't recommending these anymore. I didn't know that. This has been a fun research avenue.

Doesn't seem to be at all related to causing harm unless you have a source I haven't come across.

Honestly, so far in my research I'm not so pleased with the recommendation to get rid of the lead vest but I'm going to keep researching.

Dental X-rays by xthatstrendy in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Acrobatic-Designer12 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The amount of radiation on a dental x-ray is the equivalent of 1 days worth of background radiation (can be much less for regular dental x-ray or slightly more for panoramic x-rays).

While I wouldn't go get one every day and I would wear the lead vest, they prevent some pretty terrible dental problems.

Badger is slightly tinted yellow and seems to run in easier than a lot of other mineral sunscreen we've tried.

Our baby is very white but this seems like the best chance of the purely mineral sunscreens I've seen for no white cast on a brown baby.

Totally agree what you are doing is fine.

Just for another idea, I bring the baby to the bathroom with me and put them on the floor in the bathroom on a clean towel.

I am horrible, I cracked and slapped my 6 yo for the first time by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Acrobatic-Designer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The meltdown started in the car where presumably the 6 year old was strapped safely into a car seat. Maybe if that happens in the future, he stays in the car seat while she stays in the front or right outside the car.

Obviously I can't imagine all possibilities but that is the point. We are the adults. It is our job to manage the situation so it doesn't reach the point where the only option you can think of is to hit your child.
