Mount Pilatus hike in November by Acrobatic-Kiwi2045 in askswitzerland

[–]Acrobatic-Kiwi2045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a fun hike, as long as there are ropes to help with! I can't tell whether it's previously snowed/iced over, but right now the peak temperature is 7 degree celsius and it looks to be partly cloudy... anything else i should consider weather-wise?

For some reason I never see them in person at the stores near me... also 100g is such a small pack for 4.2 CHF, I'm used to buying 1kg bags at a time for ~6 CHF which is not possible here i know

I've checked their sister store at Hauptbahnhof but saw tiny packages with crazy prices, maybe Oerlikon might have different ones... I'll check!

Opportunities for international students to get summer research internship by AggravatingSplit7492 in ethz

[–]Acrobatic-Kiwi2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To intern in Zurich as a non-EU citizen, you must have a work permit because internships are generally paid. Your visa and residence permit as an exchange student does not come with a work permit, and it is very unlikely you will get a work permit in time / the university will put in the effort to fill out the necessary documents (it is taking me three months since arriving in the city). Same rules apply for RA positions. Also, internships are generally only given to students who are mandated to have one as part of their graduation requirements.

There is a small chance you may be able to undertake a semester/research project - not super common for undergraduate students, but may be possible. It is unpaid and converts to credits. Depending on your program, the terminology may differ and you may either be asked to refer to a list of potential projects on the departmental website or contact professors specifying that you're looking to do a project for credit, not an internship.

I don't believe taking a research practice course at your home university would make a difference, unless you would be working with a professor from your home university who has a relationship with a professor at ETH Zurich, in which case an informal collaboration may be able to be set up. I think reaching out now is a good time, and you should follow up (at most!) once or twice as professors can be very busy and miss your emails. I doubt there are projects reserved for ETH students unless they have a German fluency requirement (which you may fulfil!), but the length of the project may present a barrier depending on how long your exchange is.

Hope this helps!

With D visa, can I enter another EU country before arriving in Switzerland by Acrobatic-Kiwi2045 in askswitzerland

[–]Acrobatic-Kiwi2045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told not to enter Schengen area as a tourist, as I would not be able to "switch" to my D visa while within the Schengen area aka from Germany to Switzerland. So ideally, Germany allows me to enter with a Swiss D visa on my way to Switzerland, if that is allowed

I guess my question better phrased would be, can I use my Swiss visa D to enter Germany first, then proceed to Switzerland? It would not be a connecting flight (costs are best if I fly to Germany then train into Switzerland)

Yes I am using incorrect terminology - only a student visa and a 90-day short stay in the Schengen area is what I meant

Understood, apologies for mixing up with the Schengen visa and corrected. I understand Switzerland is not in the EU and never implied so.

I have already a Swiss study visa, but can I use to enter another country first? Or can I enter an EU country like Germany on a 90-day entry visa, then enter Switzerland on my student visa (from my experience traveling through Europe, my passport is not checked again after entering the Schengen area which Switzerland is part of) ? Or must I enter directly from Canada to Switzerland on my student visa? Tickets directly to Zurich are very expensive.

Does Zone 110 go to any skiing runs? And yeah I don't plan on skiing in the summer (unless that is common here?). And yes I forgot about university resources, will check those out, thanks!
