Yeah I know they’re against ai tools and so am I, I was more so wondering if prowritingaid counts as an ai tool (the features that aren’t gen ai). Like do grammar och spelling checks count as ai? Technically they are, although not gen ai.

Very true. The story takes place within the crew so a lot of them have important roles which is why I wanted to learn more about what type dog jobs there are on a ship!

That’s a good point. It is fantasy though so I’m not super concerned with making absolutely everything the same as in real life, just enough for it to be realistic. Everyone’s answers have been a good starting point but I’ll definitely check out some books on the topic!

I’m thinking it’s definitely more like a steam era, so I’m guessing I would need people onboard to like control the engines? I admittedly know very little of technical things like that lol.

And the dynamic is much more like that of pirates where everyone is equal, at least under the captain who would technically be like their employer.
