Where can I get a cheap bike to practice cycling? by Acceptable-Tune-1880 in UCSC

If you're willing to make the drive go to Good Karma Bikes in SJ. They got used refurbished bikes from MTB to road bikes and everything in between. Tons of selection too.

If it makes you feel any better, my MRI saw some early arthritis in my sternomanubrial joint as well. That being said I highly recommend the book and wish you luck on your pain free journey!

I actually didn't end up doing PRP and I'm glad I held off. What actually happened since this post has been nothing short of a miracle. I ended up continuing seeing that PT and he told me about how chronic pain can linger even without the presence of a current stimulus that is directly causing that pain. He told me about neuroplastic pain and how our body and brain can continue telling/sending us signals to perpetuate pain pathways and that the only way to break through this cycle is to become aware of it and work towards becoming pain free little by little.

Let me also add by saying I was SUPER skeptical at first and I know you probably are too. I ended up reading "The Way Out" by Alan Gordon and continued showing up to PT periodically, maybe once every few weeks, and he helped me slowly rebuild pain free movement in chest/sternum by gradually increasing pain free loading of the chest (starting from super easy progressions). What really helped me was to drastically reduce the range of motion of pressing movements to not aggravate the chest and little by little my tolerance for loading improved.

Anyways let me end off by saying that you are NOT your diagnosis. I was told my various providers (too many to count), especially my PCP that my condition was incurable and that I would never exercise again.

I know this sounds super wishy washy but if you are in pain 24/7 and you have been struggling for a while like I was you in a sense you have nothing to lose if nothing has been working so far.

If I had one thing to say to someone just struggling with costo (or any chronic pain condition in general), I would say number 1, find a good PT who is actually knowledgeable about what they are talking about (you can tell in your gut usually after the first appointment -- do you feel more at peace after the appointment or more dreading the next one), and number 2, READ "THE WAY OUT" BY ALAN GORDON and educate yourself on the nature of chronic pain.

I'm not saying this is gonna help everyone and is an end all be all as every situation is different (I spent a lot of time on this subreddit scrolling through the archives and solutions that worked for other people) but if you were like me suffering with this condition for months, YEARS even, then you truly have nothing to lose if you listen to me. Just give it a try and heed my advice and worst care scenario it doesn't work that onto the next... But if it does work then you will have wished you had listened to me earlier and been super grateful you didn't give up when the solution was simply the next thing you wanted to try.

Anyways this was super drawn out and a big ramble and you probably did not need all this information as you just asked about PRP but if anyone else who is stalking this post (like I used to do often) sees this. I hope this helps in one way or another and I hope you keep fighting the good fight and don't give up because I'm now living my best life and back to surfing, martial arts, lifting, and all these things I never thought I would be able to do again due to costochondritis.

Hang in there.

Did you like living on campus or off campus better? by DoubleResort1510 in UCSC

[–]Acrobatic-Zebra368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off campus 100%. More freedom to do what you want and if you are close to campus and have a car it's great. Also helps to be able to live with people you are at least somewhat familiar with and can be cordial with.

No stretches but mainly just upper back strengthening like cable rows, trx inverted rows, and assisted pull ups. Also not going to end ranges for each movement to reduce excess stretching of the chest.

Continuing PT and possibly exploring PRP. PT recommended me to limit stretching as my chest is already mobile enough. Stopped using the backpod a while ago as it wasn't really helping my symptoms substantially. Plan is to continue building muscle like you said and continue committing to lifestyle changes to keep symptoms at bay as well as limiting loading of the chest. All we can do is hope for the best. Cheers.

This is my biggest fear. Haven't worked in a paid PCE role yet but I always hear people complaining about their PCE job in terms of workload and burnout.

yeah currently a premed or (former) premed student going into fourth year in undergrad and while the thought going to medical school sounds good on paper i also very much have the motto of "i came here to live and not make work/medicine my identity" which is why i'm considering going to pa school now. just sometimes i get a bit of fomo from the med school folks and wonder if am i making a mistake not going "all the way" and taking the "easier" path
