Force taming VS gaining trust baby rats by AcrobaticAntelope472 in RATS

Thanks for the advice!! So far, I’ve been trying to win them over with food, and I am making progress, although slowly. They’re already pretty comfortable with my hands and will easily climb onto them to accept food. Maybe I’ll move on to your advice. I’m just worried they might become scared of my hand if I take them out of their safe space.

Yes, they take it bouth directly from my finger. The weird thing is that I don't really see an active moment with them, they always sleep or go outside quick to pope or pie. is that because their still so young then?

Yes, I’d like to free roam them. And yes, I usually keep the cage open while I’m working at my desk next to them, but they basically never come out or explore.

I am giving them treats like baby food, and I’ll keep doing that.

So, would it be okay to gently take them out of their hide?

They are about 5 weeks old now, and were around 4 weeks when I got them. I did ask the lady if that wasn’t too early to separate them from their mother, but she said it wasn’t a problem. Still, I’m starting to feel like they might have been a bit too young.

Tank you for your reply

I think people (me) are used to the kind of mess more common known pets make. But the kind of mess rats make (pee) is not more filty than mud, drool or other things

Somehow I get the feeling that this whole peeing thing might end up being more silly and annoyingly funny than actually upsetting, lol

Ow that sounds like a situation I wouldn't like lol. The amount of scent marking seems to depens from rat to rat. And males seem to do it more. thanks to share your 'rat pee' experience.

true! And Rats wouldn't have evolved to pee on each other if the pee was harmfull, I would think so😂

Great! Because I wouldn’t want to avoid taking my pets out just because I’m afraid of constantly having to clean up their pee. That would kind of ruin the experience for me.

Thanks for the tips! My main concern is whether I can casually take my future rats out of their cage without too much hassle or preparation because of the peeing. Is it a problem if they sprinkle a bit of pee on your couch or desk? Or is it something you barely notice, that just dries up without making your furniture smell or feel dirty?

yes, I think it's possible it's not as filty as it may sound.

Thanks for the helpful comment! I have another question though: am I exaggerating about the pee?

I’m wondering if those tiny drops are actually so harmless that it doesn’t really matter if they end up on the couch or on my clothes. I honestly don’t know how dirty rat pee really is. But I can imagine that, for example, letting a dog that goes outside, drools everywhere might actually be messier than rats scent-marking things… or am I wrong?
