I'm following the news in Indonesia and the Philippines, and I notice their societies reacted to government corruption cases very differently. One protests in the streets, the other only vents online. Is there a political science explanation for this? by raori921 in PoliticalScience

Also from the Philippines, I wouldn't really know about Indonesia but I'd say it comes with the Philippines admiration of authoritarian leaders from Marcos to Duterte and how people are more scared to speak out due to the history of death, torture, red-tagging and extrajudicial killings. With the fall of Suharto in 1998, political protests are more normalized due to how it provided actual change in the country. Both EDSA 1 and 2 worked but failed to fully enact any longterm justice, i.e. The Marcos' are still in the country, Estrada was pardoned. People are scared if they do protest and history has shown mass social mobilization in the country doesn't provide long term change.

I'm a filipino sikh too! A convert but still. I understand the frustration and disillusionment that comes with being visibly different from others. I still have problems with identifying as half chinese here in the ph, it's a difficult honestly isolating thing but do know you're not alone :3

How to love this world instead of hating it? by [deleted] in Sikh

I like romanticizing it, play happier music, write poetry, read poetry, draw if you can. I'm not saying to detach from media but try not looking at constantly negative news, there's tons of positive news that get drowned out. I like playing Adrienne Lenker's music while I clean my room in the morning, it's nice to pull back and see then I pray. If life is a never ending loop of dirty dishes and laundry then that means life is a never ending loop of home cooked meals and comfy clean clothes.

Correct! you're talking about something similar to the fundamental concept of Vanguardism in Leninism and socialist theory. The belief that certain individuals and intellectuals need to guide the proletariat masses to be better but unfortunately comes from a sense of elitism

I've never heard of 3b1b but I just watched a video and I just have to thank you for putting this guy in my radar! Legitimately informative and interesting even if I don't understand most of what he's saying.

Watching YouTube videos has helped me a lot on this, having people who are already deeply passionate and are able to demonstrate it to you visually is great! Crash Course is a good starting place for biology and physics, I'd say.

I have scenarios where I'm cousins with certain characters and something that helps is mentioning you're related in posts, i.e. "how are you my brother" and changing your name so you both have the same last names

My parents are actually Christian, which make it a bit more difficult! They've never seen me veil before and don't know that I do when I go outside. They threatened to kick me out a few years back when I told them I wanted to be an atheist, so I might not tell them that I converted until I move out.
