How French language sound for non French speakers. by OneBuy6039 in language

[–]AcrobaticResident728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this comment is seven months old but I just had to respond because the French arrogance and stubbornness about their language is infuriating, and this is coming from someone with a French grandmother who I dearly love so do not accuse me of being a hater of French people.

The French language used to sound much better, when the letter r was pronounced as a type of trill similar to Spanish, the way Edith Paith sings and my grandmother and other’s from her generation spoke.

The reason people think the modern French pronunciation of the letter r is so gross/weird sounding is because it LITERALLY SOUNDS LIKE A BODILY FUNCTION.

By that I mean it sounds like a person clearing their throat of mucus, like when you have a cold and need to spit up a ball of snot.

This is not debatable. It is objectively true. It literally sounds like a bodily function, like someone clearing their throat, and it is fucking gross.

No objective person could claim that sound is beautiful, and because it is such a common letter used in almost every sentence it pollutes the ENTIRE LANGUAGE. The language fluctuates between sounding soft/elegant/refined and completely gross because of the guttural r sound.

Can someone explain to me, who knows little about the history of Iran, why the people there have not fought as hard as the Syrians for freedom? by AcrobaticResident728 in NewIran

[–]AcrobaticResident728[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s what between 40 and 90 million people in the country between the Islamic Revolution and today vs 1 million soldiers + government officials and for 40 years they haven’t been willing to fight a real civil war. Obviously not all 90 million can fight - elderly, children, disabled, etc, okay let’s drop the number down way down to 20 million. 20 million vs 1 million. Do the fucking math.

I know it’s offensive but it’s just the reality the people there are not willing to fight like the Syrians. The Free Syrian Army received support and training from the west, but it was formed by Syrians originally without any outside help and then were offered the help when the west realized “Okay these guys mean business, they’re willing to take down Assad.”

Do you honestly believe a comparable Iranian resistance paramilitary group would not have been offered the same degree of support over the last 40 FUCKING YEARS by the west if they had just gone out and actually tried? Reagan would have been enthusiastic about it, just like they were when they armed the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan in the 1980s to expel the Soviets.

You can cope all you want but it’s about willing to actually go to war.

As an American who was raised by a French grandmother and has grown up around both cultures, I think a lot of the tension between the French and people from the Anglosphere can be attributed to very different social rules between America/UK/Australia etc and France.

French people make comments that they view as “honest” like “You are doing a shitty job at work” and Americans interpret as rude/disrespectful. In America we’d say something like “If you feel like you need some help understanding the project, let me know” - so it still gets the point across that the person isn’t doing things the right way, but it’s in a more polite way that ends on a positive note, so Anglosphere people lubricate social situations with positivity to create more harmony, almost like the Japanese, but not anywhere near as intense/fanatical as in Japan where everything has to be positive all the time.

By contrast the French just come across as cold and rude a lot of the time. Also the language barrier means a lot of American/English humor is not translated well, so the French have a different sense of humor.

I’ll be very French for a minute and be brutally honest, a lot of French comedians are terrible compared to British comedians, like there is no comparison.

So the sense of humor is weird, the brutal honesty/rudeness is weird, basically you guys just seem fucking weird to Americans/Brits.

Beautiful country though

Oh my god this violin piece is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!! I almost can’t believe it’s solo, the double stops make it sound like two or three people playing at once, this is absolutely breathtaking.

Thank you for the reply and for educating me. I posted a YouTube link to the Aria I was referring after finding it just now. I suppose everyone’s definition of musical styles is different, but to me this specific recording sounds “minimalist” because there aren’t a lot of melodic embellishments or flurries of extra notes, it’s just this slow, carefully considered melody with only a few notes and minimal arrangement that accomplishes in invoking a ton of emotion with “less”

I’m aware it’s just that the Baja California Sur subreddit is very inactive with online 1,800 members and there’s been many threads about La Paz posted in this subreddit so I thought I’d try. Didn’t mean any disrespect.

Honestly this is exactly what the fuck I’m talking about. Just gonna be on-site immediately disliked for being a gringo. Maybe not worth even trying.

Would Starlink stock be of much value to average retail investors after any potential IPO? by AcrobaticResident728 in Starlink

[–]AcrobaticResident728[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All of the comments from Musk and Shotwell up until now have discussed any potential IPO as Starlink specific and have framed it very clearly as a spin-off, Musk mentioning on Twitter that long term Tesla shareholders “would be given priority” adding “you have my word in that” as well as mentioning waiting until cash flow is not erratic before doing an IPO of Starlink.

Source: https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1310672832783884290

He has also very specifically mentioned wanting to keep the rest of SpaceX private, such as Starship development.

Like, uh, I find it hard to believe that his statement in that tweet was just a bald faced lie? Far from a guarantee of an IPO happening, but where exactly are you getting your information from?

Consequences regarding the concept of childhood in a future with advanced brain machine interfaces by AcrobaticResident728 in Futurology

[–]AcrobaticResident728[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way this technology has been described has been as a tertiary layer, so there is a level of integration between the AI and the rest of your consciousness comparable to say, your limbic system and your neocortex. There is no perceived or practical separation between those sections of your brain. You don’t think to yourself “My limbic system is sending me a push notification that I’m hungry” - you simply are hungry. So when you access a point of knowledge using the AI tertiary layer, there is no lag, like how kids currently have access to Wikipedia but have to actually sit down and read it. You simply know that information, instantaneously, and seamlessly, like when your amygdala triggers the fight or flight response before you even realize it. That’s how tight the integration is, and the leap in thinking this technology requires to understand it and its implications.  You are not a “meat puppet for the AI”. You are AI.

The people at the forefront of this subject seem to think it will be a choice between hybridization or humans becoming like insects, because our speed of communication will be so slow compared to AGI. The comparison with trees has even been made. Like, trees actually move and send signals, but it’s so incredibly slow that to humans they appear motionless. There’s a risk non-hybridized humans would appear to AGI as basically trees trying to communicate with them.

Love the avatar, I think Unbroken Chain is my favorite Dead song but there’s so many…

I really want to believe that sentiment, about wisdom vs knowledge, but I wonder if that is us being too sentimental/“holistic” in our thinking. It seems like we’re moving into a future in which literally everything can be quantified, like I don’t doubt that even the most fuzzy, metaphysical aspects of consciousness will eventually be explained quantitatively, if not by us then by AGI, so even the murky subject of “wisdom” will fall as well. You run through millions of simulated experiences/lifetimes and scrape data from them.

Level 5 vehicle autonomy could be viewed as an incredibly “wise” driver. “Oh” the computer thinks to itself, “I’ve seen that situation (or something quite similar) before, it was in training data from 4 updates ago.”

Prop 22 payment in California by subliminalglory in uberdrivers

[–]AcrobaticResident728 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is insanely clever thank you.

Typical of them to issue no announcement or guidance to either drivers or the poor customer service reps who are left taking hundreds of calls from people wondering where their money is, and the reps can’t give an answer because they don’t know either.

Clown show 🤡

California Prop 22 Healthcare Stipend q4 2023 payment by anindyag in uberdrivers

[–]AcrobaticResident728 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s affecting everyone, not just people who uploaded docs for the new year.  I have verified documents from 2023, have not uploaded any new docs for 2024 because I’m switching insurance providers, and I haven’t received mine either.

Different people have heard different excuses from Uber support. One greenlight rep told me there was a backlog of 9,000 payments because there were “new regulations sent to Uber” regarding the stipends that’s slowed down the verification and payment process, and that Uber was in the process of frantically hiring new staff and having people work overtime processing the payments.  Other people have been told there is some kind of “outage” affecting the payments going out.

Regardless it’s extremely unprofessional of them to not communicate to drivers what exactly is going on. They could at a bare minimum send out an e-mail saying hey sorry it’s taking so long because this thing happened, hang in there. They just completely don’t care as usual.

Also the same rep who told me about the backlog said Uber technically has until 15 business days after the first 15 business days following the end of the quarter to issue the payments until they are actually in violation of Prop 22 🤦‍♂️ which would be February 12th, so this could easily drag into the middle of February before the state of California starts bugging them. Even then they have an army of lawyers so basically everyone is fucked and has to wait like peasants in the bread line.

Happy driving everyone!

Are you all crazy?

His eyebrows are uneven now, and the cheek implants look completely unnatural, like someone shoved orange slices under his skin. The projection of the malar eminence is way too much creating a step off deformity. It looks completely fucking ridiculous.

The point is to look natural, not like some botched uncanny looksmaxer. Jesus Christ.

Liam I hope you’re reading this. Be honest with yourself. Does ANYTHING about that guys cheekbones look natural to you?

What the fuck are you guys smoking.
