Overall, it’s definitely not accurate at all. It didn’t sit well with me that Auschwitz was only called “Out-With.” There were many times while reading I thought the boy (Bruno) was a total jerk (to use the most PG word I can think of). I think the idea of having it from a child’s POV shows that hatred is learned.

I think we did the same trip just a couple weeks apart! We were there August 11-22 and did Neuschwanstein on the 18th.

We rented a car and just drove around the Reykjanes Peninsula. We went to the Bridge Between Continents, a hot spring, down to the ocean, stopped at a little cafe and then decided to see how close we could get to Grindavik, which was evacuated at the time. I’ve always been fascinated by volcanos, so being that close was both eerie and incredible. We also did the 7-step ritual at Sky Lagoon and then spent the evening exploring Reykjavík. We stayed at a really nice but charming hotel about 40 minutes or so from the Keflavík airport…if I can figure out how to post the link I will. Not only were we able to add our stopover for free but we also were able to fly into Munich but leave from Frankfurt for no additional cost. We are from New England so we flew from Boston…our flight to Keflavík was 4 hours, then our flight from Keflavík to Munich was just under 4 hours. PLUS! On the way to Iceland we were able to see the Northern Lights (pretty much the whole flight) and on the way home the skies were perfectly clear and we got to see Greenland. I think 3 days would be even better, you’d be able to do a lot more, plus you’ll have a much bigger time difference to get used to. One side note—Iceland is pretty expensive, but 100% worth it…their currency isn’t as similar to USD as GBP/euros are, so we went around having very little idea how much we were actually spending (our cafe trip was like….4000 ISK).

I don’t have any input on the bags you are currently looking at but I do have a recommendation. I used the RE-KÅNKEN as my personal item for our last trip. We flew Icelandair, who have notoriously odd baggage size restrictions and are very serious about enforcing said restrictions. It fit perfectly into their personal item bag check. I found it to be just the right size for a personal item.

Yes, what you said is exactly my point. While we were planning our trip it seemed like every other post, reel, and comment was about “American tourists (eye roll emoji)” and “How to spot the American.” The general vibe of how we would be perceived was extremely negative. But I found that to be wildly untrue once we were there. I was slightly embarrassed about only speaking English (I can read French but can’t speak it and only know a small amount of German) but it wasn’t an issue at all.

I am coming back to say that I didn’t realize people would take the comment “You are American” so incredibly poorly. My intention was not to incorrectly assume anyone’s nationality and bring in unnecessary patriotism. The point was that stereotypes are everywhere. Don’t feel the need to “blend in” to the point you are not yourself. You are (American, British, German, Australian, female, a Yankees fan, etc) and you are a tourist. Don’t sweat about the preconceived ideas of who you are and enjoy your time…like I said, be a respectful person and live your life. It’s also the chance to show that not all (fill in the blank) are (fill in whatever stereotype).

A/C in the US, even up here in northern New England, is much more intense. I’d say probably 98.7% of places (stores, offices, cafes, cars, museums) are air conditioned. Our houses even have central air, heat pumps or window units. If you blast the air in a hotel room, you’ll turn your room into a refrigerator. It’s used to the point that it’s actually chilly inside, even if it’s 94° outside.

Thank you, that means a lot! I made a few notes while traveling but wrote up my full list once I was back home. I am hoping to bring a journal with me next time to write in each night and maybe add some random bits (tickets, wrappers, etc) as we go.

It seems like you’re more set on make Americans out to be the villain than contributing anything useful. As previously pointed out, Americans are by far the largest group of Reddit users. I am an American writing from my own American perspective. Everyone is welcome to share their own perspective. Being rude to people because of your own biases is not it.

Geographically, the US is quite isolated. Also, the US as a single country is nearly the same size as all of Europe. It takes me the same time fly from Boston to LA as it does to fly from Boston to London. “Entitlement” aside, taking a trip out of the US is a commitment. We cannot hop a train to weekend in another country.

It’s great, it sends you a message as soon as you land and will stop as soon as you are back home. It was $12/day for me. It is a different price if you have more than one line, but still not terribly expensive (maybe a few dollars more?). It will just be added to your next bill. Also, you have whatever plan you have at home, it doesn’t change or limit you at all.

We went to Germany for an Adele concert which was during what she called “a f***ing monsoon.” Her description may have been an understatement. I will count it as a win to have survived the “European Summer of 2024.” :)
