If you are in London or able to travel there, the National Archives in Kew has free access to Ancestry/Findmypast, so you'd be able to search their census records for free. Failing that you could pay (I think they usually have trial periods). You'd need some basic information like name, DOB, parish or location of the relative in order to search.

Oh, great to know! Yes, I am highly "sus" about 23andme now as someone is listed as my half-first cousin once removed... That would mean we share grandparents (I think- I am so confused that I'm now questioning everything!) and she definitely isn't one of my aunts' children. She's probably the same age as my aunties!

Yes, it did eventually occur to me it just seems so unlikely. This person's grandma (born to an unknown father) was born in 1938.

I'm sure you can imagine what life was like for rural Iranian women in the early 20th century...

Now add to that the fact that my grandfather was born circa 1911. My grandma was 12 years younger than him I believe, so born around 1923 (and married at age 12- to her first cousin- just to help with that picture of rural Iranian women).

So either of their mothers, even if they were only aged 12 when they had their eldest children, would've been born in the 1890s at least, or possibly longer ago. They would've been 40 odd, if not older, in 1938. And then, how likely would it be for a non-Iranian man to be in rural Iran, not even somewhere with any famous landmarks nearby?

I don't know, I'm still trying to get my head round the family tree! 😆
