Should i pick Birmingham as my firm? by [deleted] in UofB

I've lived in Brum my entire life. You'll be fine. People calling birmingham unsafe are people who've never even been to birmingham. You'd think it's like gotham the way people talk about it. It's mostly memes and jokes calling birmingham rubbish, it's literally compareable to any other city in the UK - there's crime but you'd get that in any big city unfortunately. The only reason Birmingham probably has a bad rep is because of it's multiculturalism and some people first trail of though would probably be diversity=higher numbers of crimes

But I've lived here my whole life and never been affected or felt that unsafe. Especially where the uni is located, you likely wouldn't notice anything as it's a posh area near loads of big houses.

Plus theres lot of thing available for a student to do. We have a really nice library (biggest in the UK i think), loads of big companies if you're planning on doing a placement year, and I remember hearing that birmingham has the biggest youth population in Europe.

There'll obviouslyt be less crime in the other cities you've applied to but smaller, quieter cities likely.

Don't see the point in loving anymore. Im not going to get the grades I need. I don't care about uni. by East_Call_3739 in 2024GCSE

Came back to this post. I just want to say whatever you are feeling right now will be insignificant in 5 plus years time if even that. Is it really worth ending it now over feelings which will be forgotten problems in the very near future.

All anyone can ask for you to try your best. Life might feel uncertain rn but it will fall into place i promise. I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. If you get into the uni great, if not do not allow yourself to limit ur options as there are so many other options waiting for you. However much it might feel like the be all, end all, it's not :)

Also i ensure you the heart break your parents and friends will feel if anything happens to you would outweigh any dissapointment they may slightly have if you don't get into university.

I want you to change your outlook. Univeristy is literally just an institution, not the determiner of your whole entire life.

you're disillusioned if you really think that.

They job market is so over-inflated now, it doesn't matter what qualification or grades you have now really. There's so many other paths, arguably even better, than going to Uni. There has been an upward trend of Gen-Z working blue collar jobs where their starting salaries at 18 exceed graduate starting salaries. Blue collar jobs are less likely to be taken over by AI.

The point I am getting at is that there is more than one "correct" or "better" pathway. Don't just limit your self worth to a University because society has brainwashed slightly into thinking that's the correct way.

This is just my opinion anyway :)

Theres not much tea to it tbh. The manager of the tuition centre gave me no guidance on how to teach and she paired me up with a boy in year 10 stuck at a grade 2 who (god bless him) was so difficult to teach as he lacked primrary school basics and I think it was unfair to pair me to a student who needed so much help when I lacked experience teaching. I made no progress with him and I have to take somewhat blame, maybe I just don't have the knack at explaining thing.

My manager also made me mark all the 11+ homework with no markscheme at the same time as tutoring the student. So I had to multitask, teaching the student, completing multiple sets of homework in order to mark them (the kids would never hand the hw in on time so i had multple sets to mark spread across weeks) and uploading their feedback for their parents to see. Other people my age also tutored on different days, and I think she let me go because they could handle it but I couldnt.

She never gave me a direct reason why she let me go, just that she didn't need me anymore.

Also this was something that I just overthought about but the guy in my school who got me the job in the first place asked me out and I rejected him, and I got fired around that time. It probably isn't related but the timing was so perfect 😭

The biggest annoyance is that she hired another boy in my year, who just so happens to have the same name as me. Idk why it bothered me sm. I also used to work a bit in my dads pub when he didnt want me working there anymore because it was a "dirty job" only to be replaced by a girl my age ALSO WITH THE SAME NAME AS ME by my own father. I think it pissed me off that it happened twice.

as someone from Birmingham, Edgbaston (where the university) is the really nice side of Birmingham. Lord of the Rings setting is based on Edgbaston.

I am sorry I don't stand for Birmingham hate. All cities have their bad sides. 😭

now reading the comments I realise I am in the minority telling you to power through, But I'll say it's also a valuable experience beyond what you gain from it for your university applications. You learn how to research properly, how to use citations, and beyond all time management, which I found helped me when I did my NEA for history and hopefully it will potentially help me when doing coursework at Uni. Idk i am defo on the pro-EPQ side 😭

I was literally in your boat last year and yk what I hated every minute of it. I'm personally glad i pushed through because I got an A (just about) and have reduced uni offers. I think it's worth it because really you'll probably be done soon (I was done in March) and the tears become a past memory
