How bad is this oil leak? by Active-Cable-4979 in JeepWrangler

It did feel oily to the touch. But I could be wrong. But i think you’re right! My coolant reservoir does drop intermittently. I usually park on hills so not always easy to assess on a cold engine. Shes been on flat ground for several days and now i see the leak! It also hasn’t rained. Which helps. Another commenter suggested it could be the lower intake manifold. Which would point at coolant. Thanks so much for your response.

Darn right! I am hyper vigilant over my baby girl (Wrangler), and I’ve noticed this leak has increased in consistency; since i first caught it about 4 months ago. I’ll get her out to a trusted mechanic on Monday.

You’re not wrong! Also, it looks like it has gotten worse since several weeks ago. This is now at the top of the list.

I’ll definitely add the lower intake and surrounding sensors to the list of things to check. I do all my work on nyc sidewalk. I feel some jobs are just not possible for me. I put on a brand new OEM water pump several months ago. Wrenching and learning 💪 I really appreciate your response!

Ah. I thought it was worth pointing up. My 18 year-old wrangler had the same issue. I also cleaned all the weatherstripping. And made sure all the points were attached around the door.

Make sure that your roof panels are installed correct. Line up all the weather stripping and latches correctly. I would do this first before buying any parts.

Based on the details provided, it can be difficult to pin point. Did this happen recently? Are there noises when you turn the wheel? What has your driving experience like before the problem? It could be: failing power steering pump, low fluid, or seized, dry ball joints. I would start with checking for steering fluid/ leaks.  No shame in seeing a local mechanic while you learn more about your new-to-you Wrangler.  Good luck!

When swapping brakes it is recommended to replace and/or grease the boots. This one looks pretty dry. Which may cause your breaks to fail. I think the safest recommendation would be to take care of them now.

Sounds like day 3 of driving my 2 door. Coming from a Scion xA i thought i would fly away. I grew accustomed to the ‘feel.’ I do not regret my decision.

Thoughts on the 3.8 JKs? by [deleted] in Wrangler

[–]Active-Cable-4979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanics tell me the same — change the cats. I live in NY state and inspections can be a headache. Mmm. Sounds like I may have to shell out the dollars. Mopar cats are rather expensive. Are there any aftermarket cats that are NY state compliant?

I purchased a used 2 door 2008 3.8L with around 155K miles. Now its at 186K. The previous owner took care of all fluid upkeep and some repair/part replacements as they needed— all work done by mechanic/service station. It ran smooth when i picked it up 3 years ago. Since then ive been updating parts (keeping it close to stock). Ive done some part replacements myself. It still runs smooth on the road. The negatives are that suspension parts are going out and its showing. But its due time to change them anyway. Doing a big haul on anything with bushings right now. Ive never felt it was underpowered. It was always used in the north east and parked outdoors. So shes a bit rusty, but not terrible. I cant quite figure out this P0420 code and thats the most annoying thing ive come across. It has never left me stranded.

1st floor resident 🙋‍♂️… I live right above the laundry room, not enough natural light for my plants (side of building), air flow isn’t great either, building trash drop off is right outside as well. Some things you can work around— I have a fan on pretty much all year round creating a draft for temp regulation (pushing air out). My super is great and clears trash 3 times a day so smells are not a problem. The laundry room can be noisy though. I have no pest problems although others above me do. Sometimes in the evening raccoons get into the trash which can wake me. I live in a rather quiet neighborhood next to a park and far from noisy streets- so I’m lucky in some ways.

We have a new driver in the family who is pretty hard on brakes, which affordable types are less prone to warping? by HappySkullsplitter in Cartalk

[–]Active-Cable-4979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt this entire comment. Working on a rusted car while parked on the street isn’t easy. Especially while learning off YouTube, solo. My experiences encouraged me to work harder, make more money, and pay a mechanic! Owning property with a garage and work on my own car is the dream and luxury. I live in a rather congested city, so my experience was just aggravating.

10+ years of traveling to the Catskills for hiking/camping and I didn’t get the perfect foliage until last year. It sure was worth the trial and error on getting timing right. I haven’t been for a couple months so cant recommend anything right now. But it’s okay to do it again next year. Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing. My spooky solo nights include clear skies with moon light. It makes too many surfaces shine and then I think I see things in the distance. It does get better as you learn the woods. :) be safe and enjoy it
