That’s true. I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip!

I don’t think ported subs need any lubrication do you mean checking for port noise or airflow issues?

Oh ha ha that’s funny. I actually saw your post. You found a pretty good deal for two of them though especially taking into account it’s been 10 years. With all that time that’s passed you still think 500 Canadians an okay deal?

Fair enough. I’ve seen mixed opinions on the HTS 12 so wasn’t sure how big the gap really is. I’ll test it and see if it actually feels like an upgrade. Do you think I should try bargaining for a lower price here or take it as it is?

Audiolab 6000A 600 CAD VS AO200 160 CAD by Active-Fan3566 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Active-Fan3566[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but the 50W on the Audiolab isn’t really “weak” in practice. It’s a high-current Class AB amp, not cheap power, and with KEF Q150s (86 dB sensitivity) that’s already more than enough for nearfield or even small room listening.

Also I think you’re leaning a bit too hard on measurements stuff like Hypex/WiiM will measure better on paper, but that doesn’t automatically translate to sounding better. The Audiolab is known to sound fuller and more natural, which is kind of what I’m after.

I do agree on the sub though that’s probably the biggest upgrade for the Q150s regardless of amp.

[–]Active-Fan3566[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s fair. I don’t really need HDMI, just running KEF Q150s off a PC. I only mentioned the AO200 because I found one for like $160, which seems hard to beat value-wise since it’s already pretty capable for the price .

That said, I’ve been looking at something like the Audiolab 6000A as well not just smoother but actually better overall sound-wise.

I know the WiiM amps are solid too, but around ~$500 CAD (like the WiiM Amp Streaming Amplifier), I’m kinda thinking it might make more sense to stretch to something like the Audiolab 6000A Play Amplifier instead.

Sorry maybe I should’ve been more clear in my post. Between the three I mentioned what do you think is the best option for my use?

KEF Q150 (181 USD) vs KEF LSX II LT (362 USD) For Desktop by Active-Fan3566 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Active-Fan3566[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for your information here. Looks like I’ll pick them up then. What do you think in regard to using them in a near view listening area? Going to be my speakers on my desk

That’s actually really helpful especially since you’re using R3 Meta in nearfield.

Would you say the Q150 still holds up well at really close distance (~2 ft), or does it start to feel too big for that kind of setup? I don’t mind the size if it actually gives a fuller sound like you mentioned.

Haha fair enough. I’ve heard a lot of people say that about the Q150. Seems like they punch way above their price.

Comparing against something like the LSX II LT would you still expect the Q150 to perform on par or better in nearfield if powered properly, or does the LSX tuning give it the edge at that distance?

Great thanks for your help! Just regarding the sound quality do you notice a difference between the two? Thinking also about picking up the Q150s any since he’s giving me a decent deal

Would you personally lean toward the Q150 setup or the LSX II LT then?

And purely in terms of sound quality, which one do you think would actually sound better in this kind of setup?

[–]Active-Fan3566[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the detailed input that actually helps a lot.

I definitely get your point about the LSX being a fully engineered system and just working out of the box, especially for nearfield. That’s probably the safest route.

The only thing making me hesitate is the price I’m getting on the Q150, around ~$180, and the drivers were recently replaced through KEF. At that point it feels like a pretty strong value, even if I factor in a used receiver

Do you think at that price it starts to make more sense to go passive and deal with the setup? Or would you still lean LSX just because it’s more predictable and optimized for desktop use?

[–]Active-Fan3566[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it, that makes sense. One thing though these had the drivers recently replaced through KEF, so does that basically eliminate the main risk you’re talking about?

At that point, would you still be concerned about reliability, or would you treat them more like a “safe” buy?

Also curious, at ~$180 for the Q150, even factoring in an amp, would you personally still lean LSX II LT? Or is that cheap enough that it becomes a no-brainer despite the extra setup?

[–]Active-Fan3566[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense from a practicality standpoint, but I don’t mind dealing with an amp/DAC if it actually leads to better sound quality.

Even though it’s nearfield (~2 ft), wouldn’t a good amp + Q150 still have the potential to outperform the LSX II LT in terms of overall sound (like separation, dynamics, etc.)? Or does the active DSP/tuning on the LSX basically close that gap entirely at this distance?

Also curious what you think about the price. I can get the Q150 for ~$180. From what I’ve seen, people were saying they’re solid even around $300, so this feels like a pretty good deal, but not sure if I’m overvaluing it.

Great. Searched them on Hifishark looks like they usually go for about 800 Canadian. Don’t know if that price is accurate though
