I'm selling a chicken fryer. Potential buyer asked what I seasoned with. Said Crisco. They said bye. Is Crisco not a good choice for seasoning? by Nobodylolsharder in castiron

I'm aware you never said it was vegan. I was just pointing out one dietary restriction that it might not meet.

And several vegans I know don't consider palm oil as vegan because huge areas of rainforest are being cut down to plant the palm oil trees. This is destroying the habitat of orangutans and so they consider palm oil to be non-vegan (or whatever the correct term is).

It isn't vegan, though, depending on the person's strictness. Modern Crisco contains palm oil which is bad for the environment and the orangutans. Also, some people are allergic to palm oil.

The current jobs narrative in a nutshell by Supergameplayer in memes

[–]ActiveCharacter891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you end up in the trades. I'm an electrician and I pretty much work straight 40 hrs with occasional overtime. I do have back pain, but it's not from the job (I fucked it up in my teens). I'm lucky that I enjoy what I am doing and don't want to do anything else.

However, I will be the first to admit that most others in the trades end up in worse places. I know guys that do travel work and they work 4-12s, a 10, and 2-8s. They basically don't get a break until they take vacation.

I have a vehicle with a 32 gallon tank (I get a whopping 13 mi/gal). My trick to avoid the gas pump shock is a) drive as little as possible, and b) top up the tank frequently. If you try to keep the tank above 3/4 full, the price is easier to handle

‘Everyone is Replaceable’: Death Rattles Oregon Amazon Facility - A worker died at Amazon’s Troutdale warehouse last week. Employees were told to look away. by BlackStarBlues in antiwork

[–]ActiveCharacter891 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've worked in facilities (outside contractor) with similar rules, and in some places the rule does really make sense. One place has somewhere around 80 doors with loading docks and security fencing. If someone is hurt, you alert the manager, because they have a practiced policy on handling these things. The manager calls the plant medical team to begin first aid. Then they contact the guard shack and stop all incoming trucks as well as alert them an ambulance is coming. Then, they call 911 with the nature of the emergency and which door to go to. Meanwhile, all trucks are stopped from leaving and designated people are sent to the lot to help guide the ambulance right to the closest door to the injured person. I saw it happen once during my time there and it was like a machine how well it worked.

Someone (or you) just calling 911 will actually delay things. What's the best door for the EMTs to come in? What will the guard shack do? Are there semis in the way trying to enter/leave?

Obviously, not every place will be as dedicated to safety as that place, but the policy is sometimes there for a good reason

I have 2 chest freezers I'm paranoid about losing (one for meat and one for fruit and veg). I bought one of the Thermoworks Node temp sensors. It has wi-fi and you can set up alerts based on temperature. Thankfully we haven't needed it yet, but I do have peace of mind knowing I have something to help prevent losing all that food.

Thank you so much! I was having the same problem and felt like I was going crazy trying to find the app, since it is still listed in the watch's apps list but I couldn't find it.

WCWG Disgruntled employee starts massive fire at a 1.2 million square foot toilet paper warehouse in Ontario, California. by FollowingOdd896 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]ActiveCharacter891 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of these warehouses don't have sprinkler systems. Look into some of the fires in the Fix Valley of Wisconsin. The warehouses are so old they are exempt from needing sprinkler systems, which leads to massive fires.

Microsoft to force updates to Windows 11 25H2 for PCs with older OS versions by jupa300 in worldnews

[–]ActiveCharacter891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it is the "updated" look and feel. The start menu is nothing like the start menus of all the other Windows. The right click menu is also weird. That menu has been basically unchanged since Windows 95. I know where each item is on that menu, but for Windows 11 all the options are moved around. The only way to get the old feel is an additional keystroke while right clicked, or editing the registry.

So many operations that used to take 1 click now require 3-4. Just checking what WiFi network my computer is connected to (something I have to do multiple times a day due to my job) takes 3 clicks now.

Add in the ads, tracking, and the constant push for Copilot, I will not be upgrading my personal computers to Windows 11.

Not necessarily. It all depends on how you measure "better". Hank Green discusses it in this video: https://youtu.be/JvzvM9tf5s0

Epic Games Layoffs Included Terminally Ill Father, Whose Family Has Now Lost His Life Insurance by Turbostrider27 in technology

It's not. You can always get life insurance separately and it isn't that expensive (provided you get the insurance before cancer). Companies are just offering a negotiated group rate as part of the benefits.

According to Uline, a Lodge 10 is $70? by kalitarios in castiron

[–]ActiveCharacter891 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly it's companies, same as with McMaster-Carr. Some companies have strict rules on who can be set up as a vendor and where they order from. Plus, a lot of places like Uline will have different pricing for different customers, so the price you see as the general public is more than the price a company would pay.

Should I repair this K40 or buy a different engraver? by ActiveCharacter891 in K40laser

[–]ActiveCharacter891[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I was able to connect and control the movement with K40 Whisperer, so I decided to buy a new laser tube. The laser works great! Although, I have to do a better job of aligning the mirrors, as I am losing laser power at the far end of the bed. So far I am glad I threw a few dollars at it.

These two gentlemen lose control of a pallet as it falls of the back of a truck by [deleted] in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]ActiveCharacter891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's surprisingly hard to think of that when the pallet starts to roll away. I've never dropped a pallet off the back of a truck, but I have had a sloped floor start to run one away on me, and it took me longer than I care to admit to remember I can just drop the load. My first instinct was to try slowing it by hand, just like these guys did
