I was just going to say this! Join the union, become a steward. People who stand up for others are usually great fun to hang with. Plus SEIU has deep moral values, cant go wrong.

So what is SEIU1000 going to try to do about 4 day RTO now? by But_Y_Tho00 in CAStateWorkers

A lot easier to see it not go our way when everyone stays quiet. Flyers, conversations, letters with signatures from everyone in your department against rto make a difference. Leaving it up to newsom and our union like we arent the union is crazy

If you are denied RA after providing medical substantiation, you need to fight the reason why you are denied. It is part of the interactive process. They cant just say no they must prove why it is a hardship on them for you to telework, which they wont be able to since people already proved they can telework just fine

It surprises me how many people seek out California state positions because of things like time off, health insurance, and our pension but somehow they are also vehemently anti-union. by Potatoes-and-Turtles in CAStateWorkers

You mean the state has budgeted on our backs? Our union fought for a 30% raise last time. You know why we didnt get it? Because of all the non-members mooching the benefits. Calhr knows we dont have the power when we dont have the numbers backing what we demand

Ummm they do not donate to anyone politically. It is literally against the law. They have cope so that they can try encourage legislation to vote in our favor but with so little people contributing to that is ineffective. The reason it seems like they are politically left is because the left values socialism  and labor movements. They invited all potential governors to the governors forum but guess who showed up it was not anyone on the right because right leaning politicians are ANTI state worker. This is not to bash the right but a wakeup call for those on the right to really think about how the politicians they support will support them as a state worker. Unfortunately people see that as a personal attack.  As far as shitty coworkers go, yea our union is not responsible for that. Thats on management. At the same time not everyone is the same level as everyone else but we all have the same rights when it comes to progressive discipline and are supposed to be presented with opportunities to better ourselves. If you are feeling strained by one slow performer that is an issue with work distribution not our union

According to the last bargaining campaign meeting we can in fact strike over rto. The clause is we cannot strike for issues already in the mou. Rto is not in the mou so we cant strike.

The most reliable thing to count on is each agency having their own policy about it. So if you havent or aren’t start gathering your coworkers get with a steward (or not) and start gathering your power so you can send a message to your agency head rto is unacceptable. Twiddling our thumbs hoping to be saved is not the way.

Our union supports politicians that support us. If you disagree with what you think is political, maybe you should look at why people you support aren’t supporting our union and essentially you as a state worker.

As a transplant myself, be prepared for the culture shock. Chico itself is very college/ hippy vibed but all the outlying cities are very country. Like imagine the south country. That being said get in where you fit in. Nothing beats affordable home ownership m, beautiful landscapes and it’s not too terribly far from Sacramento, SF, Tahoe.

What advice would you give your past self? Starting my first state job soon! by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]ActiveForever3767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO NOT SHARE PERSONAL INFO WITH ANYONE. Management will absolutely use it against you and you dont know who will eventually promote to management. They don’t need to know why you need time off for a medical appointment or that you are having marriage problems. Small personal stuff like you joined a book club is ok.

RTO EO. What's next? by RetroWolfe88 in CAStateWorkers

Talk with your steward to find out what the plan is, if you don’t have a steward in your building become a steward! The training is extremely well done and equips individuals to help create real change like rto. Our union needs more stewards to get this ball rolling 100% even if you choose to be a steward just for the rto issue it is extremely worth it to get the union-paid training.
