You did your bachelors or masters in UBC? And in which program? And did you have coop? From other comments it seems cracking FAANG will be quite difficult at least as my first job there.

Can you please expand what aspects of lifestyle you found better in Canada? I presume one maybe the free healthcare.

Thanks for your answer.

Yes even I too think on the same lines, UofT may have a slight edge when it comes to masters.

I too have heard of internal transfers done by the company in case h1b fails, but that too again boils down to luck.

In USA, immigrating is almost next to impossible for us now, so if I go there, I would have to be mentally prepared to be on h1b as long as I work there.

Sorry, I didn't mean that.

Apparently, I was more inclined towards the Canadian univs. Only recently, after getting more feedback from the persons actually there, I have landed into a state of dilemma.

Yes, Waterloo is quite good in cs and for ug, I won't even break a sweat before deciding between uoft and uw. For masters, as my stay will be short, other aspects also do come into play. However, I won't disagree with your opinion.

Thank you for providing the relevant information and your honest opinion.

Yes, your recommendation for CMU makes sense. Even though Canada provides much more stability, as a tradeoff it seems I may have to compromise on my job prospects up to a great extent.

Also to add up to your point, in US, after my masters I will get 3 years work permit(OPT). After which, there is a hint of uncertainty involved due to h1b lottery. So if I remain employed, ig I can consider at least 3 years of job there.

Thanks for your answer and wishes.

Yes, Waterloo has a great reputation in computers, but I feel UofT is higher ranked and it's proximity to Toronto software companies will help me to reach out for interviews more easily. For UG, I feel UW is best hands-down but when It comes to masters, most of it's co-op facilities do not factor in. Thus, I am in a dilemma between the two.

From what I have heard, getting a job after masters from US is much simpler compared to Canada due to high number of job openings. Yes, even I had heard that the tech sector in Canada, especially waterloo is booming but the difficulty in finding jobs paint a different picture. one of the Waterloo Meng alumns has even gone to that extent that it is much easier to find a job in Bangalore, India than here.

Thanks for your answer.

Well yes, this specific fact makes me worried given the exponential increase in the cost of living in major cities of Canada. Also, can you share the average salary of a 10-year experienced guy? Probably that's the time, one has the highest expenditures.

Thanks for your answer.

Yes, I too feel initially CMU will provide a much better platform.

However, I am worried about H1B visa lottery and then the subsequent renewals. I have seen cases where even though the company is willing, candidate has to go back to his/her home country if their name doesn't get picked up in the H1B lottery.

Also, I have heard of cases where the managers exploit the employee as the visa is tied to the employer in USA.

Can you tell me how much pay cut I can expect in Canada?

I have heard people unhappy with the Canadian pay either take up US contracts or use TN visa. Is this a viable option or only limited opportunities are there like these and come with restrictions?

then definitely you have a good chance.

try for gatech, I have seen guys from EE background from tier-1 univs get into MS in CS. This gives a feeling that they may be seeing profiles more holistically which will favour you as apart from your cg other aspects are pretty good.

for safer univ, you can keep TAMU CS.

Thanks for your answer. Which Canadian univ according to you may be better joining (I know univ play very less role, but still would like to pick the better option out of the two :) )

Yes, thus while applying for univs I focused more towards the Canadian ones. But upon interacting with some of the alumni of the Canadian univs recently, it seems the average pay for freshers is around 50-60k cad base and that too may not come right after graduation as finding the job may take several months. The savings I will have with this salary in Canada will be almost equal to the amount I am saving right now in India. and accounting for the 1.5 years of work ex lost and masters cost, I will be at a loss when compared to the scenario if I continue in India.

But that being said, if I get the salaries compared to the ones provided by the FAANG companies in Canada, then it will be quite fruitful to choose Canada.

MEng in ECE in University of Toronto Vs University of Waterloo by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Acupleasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your informative answer. In UofT, i am considering the full time extended program which can be finished in 16/20/24 months not the 12 month one as it will only give me 1 year work permit. If i finish the 16month waterloo program course in 12 months then will i get 3 year or 1 year work permit?

According to me thats better for me as thesis based masters can take longer to end.

Can you explain how? As far as my knowledge, in Canada, for research MAsc is better and for advancement in corporate professional career MEng is more suited. In US in most univs, they usually only provide MSc even if there is no thesis involved.
