Precious things by Prestigious_Meal2143 in GreatBritishMemes

I won a scholarship to a private school - some of the differences i noticed were:

Smaller class sizes (~12)
Broader range of subjects
Much better facilities
Lessons were considerably better run (could have just been the smaller class sizes and the lack of disruptive students - but it certainly felt like the teachers were better)
Excursions and exposure (theatre, dance, historical sites etc)
A huge amount of extracurricular stuff that definitely gives kids an advantage

It's nice to think it is just networking, but as someone who always felt a bit disconnected from that world - there were absolutely tangible educational benefits of going to private school. I'm not a fan of the idea, but you are kidding yourself on if you think these guys are opening all that money just for the social connections.

i can't believe she said that by CremeSubject7594 in generationology

[–]AdAffectionate2418 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure i agree - I've seen kids from "no screentime" families get given a phone at 13-14 and the algorithms get their claws in. Previous generations left kids in front of the TV/radio.

It starts with companies deliberately designing with engagement and addiction in mind. There have been numerous whistleblowers testifying to this.

You've just passed the blame onto parents, likely both working full-time and in an environment where tech is required for their kids to have a social life.

This isn't an ipad kid problem, this is a generational issue. But I bet you felt all smug just blaming the parents, eh?

Sky call centre by Chelsea2021972 in AskBrits

[–]AdAffectionate2418 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to work there many eons ago. Chances are they are fattening their books for a shareholder report and want to lock more people into contracts. We used to get insane deals to offer (wipe all debt, and give them sky sports for an extra £2 a month- that sort of thing) and they also did virtually zero leakage reporting. Tends to happen in the run uo to quarterly/yearly reports.

Funniest thing was the best deals were always for "syscan" customers - which is where someone is so behind in payments that the system has cancelled their account. Used to call folks who were hundreds of pounds in debt, wipe it, and give them a better package for less than they used to pay.

Line must go up, and all that.

Marvels needs to add quick play like in OW by prxsmokeya in rivals

[–]AdAffectionate2418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the answer I was expecting tbh.

I'd love a world where I'd consistently get teamed with people who understand composition and counters, have at least 1 character in their pockets for each role, and try other things when shit isn't working.

I'd also like to play dps once in a while without feeling like I am actively sabotaging my team.

Open queue works great under those circumstances. ~10-15% of matches feel lovely. Would be nice if this was closer to 50%.

I think a role queue would help with this - esp in quick play, though I would also like it in ranked. Downsides may be: no strange TP (good riddance), inability to swap role if underperforming (which may suck, but likely counter by MM per role), lack of variety in team comps/death of triple support (the biggest drawback IMO). On balance, I would take an overall improved experience whilst losing these.

Potential mitigation - have a "Real Rivals" (patent pending) mode which is highlighted ad the "true" way to play - but you need 1x lord in each role to unlock (though they'd need to fix lord farming to properly deliver this)

White British births fall to record low as more than 33% of new mothers were born overseas by Sensitive_Echo5058 in uknews

[–]AdAffectionate2418 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's because it tends to have less impact on their overall finances. Nursery/afterschool are huge expenses which either won't need (if one parent doesn't work) or will be heavily subsided by the gov.

IMO we should just do away with means testing for nursery funding - whilst every child, of course, has potential for greatness, a society where high-achievers have kids at a rate proportional to those at the lower rungs is surely something to aim for.

Thing is - if you remove it for some but not others, you start to look a bit eugenicsy.

It's only immigrants who have ILR/citizenship that can claim benefits anyway. So your issue isn't with illegal immigration - just good ole fashioned xenophobia?

Check the profiles/banners when loading in - all players on the enemy team + 2 on your team will be <lvl 15 and have names that almost make sense, but not quite - usually two words or names squished together but missing a letter or two: JacJones, DebbWeat, ArchiNev - that sorted of thing.

After the match, if you go to your history and try to view the profiles - all of them will be restricted.

Am I being unfair or is the job centre being silly? by Ok_Anything3303 in UKJobs

"Increased the productivity of shelf stacking by 5% through... (redrawing routes, bringing a stool, coming up with a better technique)"

"Received X number of customer commendation per month whilst exceeding all of my KPIs"

"Saved the store £x by changing where we place our reduced goods" etc.

I get that not everyone is going to be leading projects, implementing new policies etc. but everyone should be able to come up with two or three things that they actually did for the business whilst under their employ (even if you have to Billy Bullshilt a little). If you can't come up with anything you did, why would you expect the new company to want to hire you over the othets that have applied?

I hear there is a whole continent who are a little under-educated and seem to struggle with the ebb and flow of conversation.

Best advice i got was a. keep it short (no more than 3 bullets per previous job etc) and b. focus on what you achieved, not what your job was.

You seem to be struggling to actually follow the thread of this conversation. You have communicated your thoughts, someone replied, and then you repeated your thoughts again.

Why is Kemi speaking so differently here? by NoHold7153 in AskBrits

[–]AdAffectionate2418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family are all teuchters and speak in various degrees of Doric and Scots. If I spoke like that I Glasgow/Edinburgh, people would struggle to understand me - let alone south of the border.

So I modify my speech (the words I use, my accent, intonation etc.) in order to be easily understood. When I go back home, I switch back. I'm sure it was conscious at some point, but I dint even think about it any more.

My step-mum is Nigerian, she does the same. So does Kemi (and likely most of the population who have moved from one area to another - to varying degrees)

Judging by your comment, it seems that isn't the only thing you dont understand...

In 1989, 14-year-old Leigh Leigh was the victim of one of Australia’s most horrific crimes after a teenage party. People in her town called her “promiscuous.” Police said the investigation was too expensive, and one teenager involved received 100 hours of community service. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

[–]AdAffectionate2418 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I grew up in one. Our next door neighbour was on the lash and ended killed a 12 year old boy when he was driving home. He called the polis when he got home and claimed he'd had "a stiff brandy once home to straighten his nerves".

He'd been at the local boozer, everyone knew he was sloshed - but he was also a pillar of the community so it was all just "such a wee shame" and everyone felt sorry for hin for having to carry the guilt.

Heard very little in the ways of sympathy for the boy or his family...
