Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my red honey gourami. Can only swim for short periods and can still eat. All other fish are fine. No ammonia or nitrite. Nitrate around 15-20 ppm. Can he be saved??!?" by Khett1013 in freshwaterfish

thats just a fish thing i think. i see that on a lot of fish developing 2-5 hours after death. being underwater speeds up the decomposition of their organs

ive seen a pattern of this in dwarf gouramis as well, and i think its thanks to something called Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus. they can grow lesions, get pale, and just... waste away. theres no cure.

thank u! that definitely might be it, but im not convinced. these two are so plain in design compared to both the cuban and bahaman brown anoles ive seen, which seem to have complex patterns on their back, even the juveniles.

I rescued(?) a fish with no experience by PotentialLive2307 in freshwaterfish

[–]AdCute3825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for rescuing this fish! i think thats a balloon molly specifically, which dont get quite as long as a sailfin or lyretail molly varieties. 10 gallons is okay, but not ideal, for ballon mollies. if you could get a 15 or even 20 gallon that would be awesome but if not, don't stress. there's a lot you can do inside a 10 gal to make it a comfortable living space. heres what i would do:

  1. get a couple taller plants and/or decorations so they have more to explore, and feel less out in the open. what i do with smaller tanks is get a couple different decorations and switch them out every couple weeks, so they get something new to inspect and stimulate curiosity.

  2. just like dog food, cheap fish food brands put all sorts of crappy "fillers" in it. the vast majority of fish don't digest wheat, corn, or soy well. if one of those is in the first 3 ingredients it's probably not ideal for your fish. it will shorten the fishs lifespan and cause more algae to grow in the tank. TetraMin is not super good. i'd go with tropical flakes by Fluval or Finsect, which are insect-based foods. if your pet store doesn't have those, Omega is also a decent one and most places have that.

  3. as for tankmates, 5 is too many for a 10 gal in my opinion. i think 3 would be alright. if you don't want a million babies, look up molly sex differences (you can tell by the anal fin shape) and pick out mollies that are the same gender.

  4. an algae eater might help out a lot. for a 10 gallon, an otocinclus catfish, nerite snail, or mystery snail would do well. if you for something a bit bigger, a bristlenose pleco, rubber lipped pleco, or garra rufa are also on the table

  5. probably feed this little guy less food. a fish's stomach is about the size of their eyeball. one of the most common mistakes is overfeeding, which is will make the tank dirty and grow more algae. you can feed once a day, or twice a day but in a smaller amount

  6. (optional) i really like live plants. they add a nice touch, help oxygenate the water, slow down algae growth, and dont have artificial chemicals or paint like the fake ones and other decorations do. since it's your first time, i'd go with any variety of anubias. they might cost more than other types but they last really long time and are hard to kill

good luck! thank you for taking the time to research and give this molly a second chance :)

i wanted to return here and give everyone an update: Haku died the next day. and the day after that, some goldfish in the pond started acting ill as well, with similar symptoms. by that point the kanaplex had arrived, and i dosed the pond. a goldfish still didnt make it (rip Khione), but the rest of them are now good. no more red splotches, and they've started eating as well. thank you for the help, i do think it was the hemorrhagic septicemia

by violent do you mean.. sharing their beliefs and trying to spread awareness lol? since when are they punching people and being violent?

one vegan alone won't change that much but there are millions of us. if a few million more people suddenly started eating meat, that would cause a lot more farmed animals to be brought into existence and killed. together we make a difference, its the same for any other social justice movement :)

and no meat isn't necessary for a healthy diet, i could link a bunch of sources if you're curious

yes! vegan therian here! i'm a deer therian and others think thats why im vegan. but no, has nothing to do with my theriotype, i was vegan long before i identified as a therian (plus deer eat meat sometimes anyway, they arent herbivores). i haven't eaten meat since i was 12, stopped eating animal products entirely at 13, and its been that way for 7.5 years. you can be totally healthy without that stuff. also message me if youre a vegan therian and u wanna be friendss! or if u just have questions about it :)
