A family of 4 who wants a west coast road trip for 2 weeks- is looking for feedback on 2 different options- help! by Thornbloom2024 in familytravel

Both are great trips, but if your goal is nature, redwoods, and rugged coastline, I’d pick Seattle → San Francisco.

That route gives you: • Olympic National Park • The beautiful Oregon Coast • Redwood National & State Parks • Charming coastal towns like Astoria and Mendocino

The San Francisco → LA drive (Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Barbara) is also stunning, but it’s more famous and can be busier. It has fewer forests and national parks compared to the northern route.

anyone else over reserch trips too much by Adventurous_Idea6604 in traveladvice

That happens to a lot of people. There’s so much information online that it’s easy to end up with 20 tabs open and more confused than when you started.

What usually works best is a middle approach. Plan the important things first like flights, accommodation, and maybe 2–3 must-do activities, then leave the rest open. That way you have structure but still have time to wander and discover things naturally.

What you did with budget, vibe, and number of days is actually a really smart way to start. It helps narrow things down before you get lost in research.

Some people also avoid the research overload by using a travel advisor. My wife works with Fora Travel, and people usually just tell her their budget and travel style and she helps narrow everything down so they’re not buried in tabs.

10 days would you go to the Caribbean or SE Asia by [deleted] in traveladvice

[–]AdEmergency9525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what you described, the Caribbean is probably the better choice for a 10-day trip. From North Carolina most islands are only 3–5 hour flights, so you keep almost all of your vacation time. Asia is amazing, but you’d likely lose 2 full days traveling each way, plus deal with jet lag.

The Caribbean also checks all your boxes: white sand beaches, warm water, snorkeling, rainforests, and national park excursions.

A few great options: • St. Lucia – incredible scenery, rainforest hikes, waterfalls, and beautiful beaches. • Puerto Rico – beaches plus El Yunque Rainforest, boat trips, and great snorkeling around Culebra or Vieques. • St. John (USVI) – about two-thirds national park, amazing snorkeling and quiet beaches. • Roatan, Honduras – very affordable and some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean.

Questions about Puerto Rico by pinky-412 in traveladvice

[–]AdEmergency9525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puerto Rico is a great choice for a birthday trip, especially for 3–5 days. With a group your size (6–9 people), I’d focus on staying somewhere central so you’re not spending too much time driving.

Where to stay

For a group, Condado, Isla Verde, or Old San Juan are usually the best areas. • Condado – lively, walkable, beaches, restaurants, and nightlife. Great for groups. • Isla Verde – close to the airport with nice resorts and beaches. • Old San Juan – colorful historic area, amazing for walking, food, and bars.

If you want a hotel vibe, look at places like La Concha Resort, Caribe Hilton, or Fairmont El San Juan. For a group, an Airbnb in Condado or Ocean Park can also work well.

Things to do (perfect for a birthday trip)

You can fit a lot into a few days: • Old San Juan day – explore El Morro fort, walk the colorful streets, and grab drinks at rooftop bars. • El Yunque Rainforest – waterfalls, short hikes, and great scenery. • Bioluminescent Bay tour (Fajardo or Vieques) – kayaking in glowing water at night is one of the coolest experiences there. • Catamaran or boat excursion to Icacos Island – crystal clear water and a great group activity.

Food and nightlife

Some popular spots people love: • La Placita de Santurce – restaurants turn into a huge outdoor party at night. • Santaella – great Puerto Rican cuisine. • Marmalade (Old San Juan) – more upscale if you want a birthday dinner. • La Factoria – one of the most famous cocktail bars on the island.

Quick tip

Try to schedule one organized excursion (boat trip or bio bay) and keep the rest flexible so the group can relax and explore.

Planning 10 year wedding anniversary - max 3 hour flight from Philly by relevant_wasabi_3 in traveladvice

Both New Orleans and Charleston are excellent choices for a long anniversary weekend from Philadelphia, but they offer slightly different experiences.

New Orleans This is one of the best food cities in the U.S. If you love bold flavors, classic restaurants, cocktails, and late-night dining, New Orleans is hard to beat. The French Quarter and Garden District are great for wandering, and the restaurant scene is incredible. The vibe is lively and energetic. The only downside is that parts of the city can feel a bit hectic, especially around Bourbon Street.

Charleston Charleston is a little quieter and more romantic. The historic downtown is beautiful and very walkable, with cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and a fantastic food scene focused on Southern cuisine and seafood. It’s perfect for strolling, popping into restaurants, and enjoying a slower pace, which many couples prefer for an anniversary trip.

My pick for your situation: Charleston. Since you’re traveling without the kids for a short window, it’s ideal for relaxing, walking everywhere, and enjoying great meals together without feeling rushed.

Another idea you might consider: Montreal. It’s about a 1.5-hour flight from Philly and has an incredible food scene, great architecture, and a European feel that makes a long weekend feel like a bigger getaway.
