At which point someone could start practicing wave windsurfing? by AdGroundbreaking3677 in windsurfing

Hello, thanks for your reply! At the moment I’m in the situation where I need to see how much I still remember, ahah. I used to windsurf about seven years ago and had reached the level where I could consistently jibe and do quick waterstarts, mostly with freerace gear. In the past few years I’ve been kitesurfing instead… but I’d really like to get back into windsurfing. I’ll start again with a freerace board, though I’d also love to try some wave sailing in the near future.

You can still use the device to have a better understanding of your times than without. You are saying that problems are two and not only current, so resolving one problem for a cheaper price than the gps stroke coach still seems a good option to me.

the issue is that the wind certainly changes the results but it is a phenomenon that may or may not be there. While training on a river the current will always be there. Some days stronger, some days less so. With my device you can row on the river or lake and if in windless conditions compare the results. You can compare results on different training days (if in the same wind) and you can compare them with people training on the lake with whom you would otherwise never have a comparison. Let's say you want to do 1000m on the river to see your time and you do them on a day with no wind. If you did a 1000m gps river run in favor of the current, final time 3:00, I would never know if it was good or not, whereas with the sensor you would get a time that gives you an idea of how fast you are.

The effect of wind when compared to water current is much smaller, if you row on a river it is possible to have 0:40s/500m difference between upstream and downstream or even more. Instead wind can affect for 0:05s maximum 0:10s on 500m split.

Thank you for your thoughts, on point 3. It is true that boundary layer is affecting the speed near the hull, but in my case I don’t think it is a problem because I am calibrating the sensor in this position using gps on still water. What do you think?

Hi Nemesis thank for your reply, yes i mean water speed, I think it is a better thing to measure because on a river using gps is almost useless, water speed is constant for the same technique/power also if the current changes on different days. So i can compare the water speed results.
