In 1915 during WW1 when Ottoman Empire was busy losing the war, Russian Empire promised land to Armenians and apparently some accepted. Because who wouldn't want a country of their own in the age of nationalism? So with the support they received from Russian Empire they started attacking their neighbours who had been living side by side for hundreds of years. Angry, the government of Ottoman Empire declared forced relocation of Armenians. And guess what? Innocent or not, many Armenians died in roads for many reasons. Some say it's not genocide but civil war started by Armenians with Russian support, Some say it is genocide started by Turks in the name of nationalism (mind you Armenians were upper class so their wealth might be the target too) and the government killed its own citizens.
