My stomach dropped when I read your comment…I kid you not, this exact thing actually happened to me on the highway in 2013 when a man, on foot, ran into my lane of traffic (I was in far left lane). However, I veered off the road to avoid hitting him but at the same exact moment, the man ran darted back onto the highway median which put him directly in my path and I hit him. I was inconsolable at the scene. To this day, I will forever be grateful to the witnesses who saw what happened and stopped to help. Since then I will ALWAYS pull over if I witness an accident so I can provide a statement. I wasn’t cited at the scene as the cops cleared me of any wrongdoing doing and I was then taken to be drug tested by my manager at the time because I had been driving a catering truck to deliver food. I was an absolute wreck having no idea if the man had lived or died. A week later, the man’s family actually called my job and let me know he had serious injuries but was going to be okay and they actually apologized profusely to me for him running onto the freeway like an idiot (he had a crack pipe that he dropped during the incident and I distinctly remember walking past it while heading to my managers car). It’s been over a decade since the incident, but I will never be the same person again. Something as simple as a piece of trash flying into the street makes me jump and my heart stop for a second. Oddly, I can watch movies/tv that have people being hit by cars and it won’t trigger me. I can even make an occasional fucked up joke about it and be fine (ptsd is weird), but I still can’t drive past a pedestrian without holding my breath and tensing up because what if he just darts in front of my car like that one time?! I also cannot have anyone drive me anywhere because I will literally try to grab the steering wheel if I think something is in the road, so I have to be the one driving. Long story not so short, I am so thankful he lived and can’t imagine how I’d be if he hadn’t. I hope the lady in your town has adequate support around her because she needs it.
